Leeds United now want to sign 26-year-old player who Kenny Dalglish says is a huge threat at set pieces

Under Daniel Farke’s own admission, Leeds United could yet enter the market for another centre-back.

The Whites are currently stretched in that area of the field right now, with Charlie Cresswell expected to depart and not up for selection until he improves his attitude, and Pascal Struijk’s injury taking longer than first thought to recover.

Ethan Ampadu and Joe Rodon have formed a formidable partnership since the turn of the New Year, but at the same time, the former has played his best football in midfield.

As such, Leeds have been browsing the Premier League loan market for central defenders, with Everton’s Ben Godfrey mentioned as a potential target earlier this week.

However, according to the Daily Mail, Leeds are keeping an eye on the situation of Liverpool’s Nat Phillips after his loan spell at Celtic came to an end at the beginning of the month.

Blackburn and Cardiff battling Leeds for Phillips

Blackburn Rovers and Cardiff City are also said to be keen on doing a deal for Phillips, who has reportedly been given the green light to leave on loan once again before next Thursday’s deadline.

Leeds were linked with a move for Phillips in the summer but instead completed a deal for Rodon, which has proved to be an inspired piece of business.

Phillips made just three league starts during his time at Celtic and so it would be fair to say Leeds dodged a bit of a bullet not bringing him for a reported fee of £10 million in the summer.

That said, the 26-year-old has proven himself to be a solid centre-back in the opportunities he has had at Liverpool and former Reds legend Kenny Dalglish believed he deserved more of a chance in Scotland.

Speaking back in October, Dalglish hailed Phillips as a ‘good defender’ and ‘threat’ from set-pieces. It will be interesting to see if Leeds do firm up their interest again after deciding against a deal in the summer.
