Promotion, under the ownership of the 49ers, looks set to mark the start of a very bright new dawn for Leeds United.
The 49ers have been involved with Leeds United since 2018, completing a full takeover of the club in 2023 with Paraag Marathe being installed as the club’s chairman.
And Marathe is flying into the UK this week to watch the final game of the season away at Plymouth Argyle, before holding crunch talks with Daniel Farke.
Farke is reportedly facing the sack at Leeds United despite guiding the club to promotion at the second time of trying. Some reports though have suggested that Farke will be staying at Leeds United for next season.
Nonetheless it remains an exciting period for the club, made more so by the club’s recent announcement regarding the long-awaited Elland Road expansion.
Leeds United need to raise £100m for Elland Road expansion
It’s been suggested that the Elland Road expansion could begin in Autumn this year. It comes after the club released new concept images of how the stadium could look once fully expanded and refurbished and it’s certainly gotten a lot of Leeds United fans excited.
The plan is to increase the capacity from just under 38,000 to somewhere in the region of 53,000. But The Athletic have revealed the first of no doubt many hurdles in the whole project, and that’s the funding. Beren Cross writes that the club still needs to raise £100million.
But Cross adds that ‘the club is confident of raising’ the money needed ‘to ensure the redevelopment gets over the line’. Cross also states that ‘promotion has not been cited as the key to starting work, but it will make life a lot easier for the club as they hope to progress along this road’.
The good news for Leeds United amid Elland Road expansion plans
It’s not a very well-kept secret that Premier League football makes teams almost infinitely more wealthy, through TV revenues and sponsorships and all that comes with being a top flight team in England.
And after securing promotion, Leeds United have locked in £200million in TV money alone, spread out across the next three years and guaranteed to the club, even if they’re relegated in the upcoming 2025/26 Premier League season.
So for Marathe and those looking to get the stadium expansion complete, the good news is that they have a huge influx of money coming. But The Athletic’s report suggests that this £100million is still to be found, implying that the latest Premier League riches have been taken into account.
That, and Leeds still need money for new signings this summer. Progress on the new stadium could ultimately prove slow, depending on how Leeds fare in the top flight next time round.
