Leeds United are set to lose out to Premier League side Luton Town in the fight for Daiki Hashioka but a new report claims the Whites pulled out of a move for the Japan star – because of an injury.

Hashioka, 24, has impressed in Belgian football over the last couple of years after leaving Urawa Red Diamonds for Sint-Truiden. He has had a hand in 16 goals in 91 matches for the Jupiler League side.

Reports over the weekend said that Leeds were closing in on a move for the Japan international. But, it then appeared that Luton were closing in on a £2m deal – with Fabrizio Romano saying ‘here we go’.

A shame, because Leeds are desperately in need of a right-back. Luke Ayling and Djed Spence have both left, while Archie Gray picked up an injury last week in the 1-0 win over Norwich at Elland Road.

The need for a right-back, remains. Leeds have made a loan bid for Ben Godfrey but you imagine that one is going to be difficult to do, given the amount of clubs interested – and that we’re in the second tier.

The next few days are certainly likely to bring up a number of twists and turns and it might be that an unnamed defender is brought in, with numerous options still available as the January deadline closes in.
