Leeds United were linked with a surprise move for Japan star Daiki Hashioka on Sunday with reports claiming he was on his way to Elland Road – but reporter Fabrizio Romano says that is not the case.

Hashioka has impressed over in Belgian football with Sint-Truiden. Two years with the Jupiler League side, he has played 91 times in all competitions – having a hand in 16 goals. He’s won seven Japan caps.

Reports from Belgian sources said that he was on his way to Leeds this month, on the weekend. Leeds beating Genk to a move for the impressive defender. But then, it emerged Luton were also interested.

Now, it appears the lure of the Premier League has convinced Hashioka and his representatives. The latest comes from Fabrizio Romano, who reports that Hashioka is set to join Rob Edwards’ Luton Town.

Romano posted his trademark ‘Here We Go’ on Twitter to signify a deal is pretty much done, with Luton set to pay a fee of £2m for the right-back. Leeds then, have missed out on another right-back option.

A shame that Leeds have not been able to get a deal for Hashioka over the line. A right-back that has impressed in Belgium, with the quality of the Belgian Jupiler League improving over the last few years.

The Japan star is energetic, good going forward but solid in defence as well. The right-back would have been a very good signing. Whether he is ready for the Premier League or will start, remains to be seen.

Leeds now have just a few days to get some new players in, with the deadline approaching on Thursday. A new right-back and possibly another defender signing are top of the agenda, right now.
