Leeds United are now set to be on the lookout for midfielders to replace Tyler Adams.
As per various reports, Adams underwent a medical at Bournemouth yesterday and his move to the South Coast could be announced at any moment.
The 24-year-old is set to be Leeds’ first big money sale of the summer, with the two clubs having reached an agreement of around £23 million + add-ons, according to Phil Hay.
That fee is slightly higher than that of the £20 million release clause in his contract that Bournemouth had thought they had triggered earlier in the week.
Once he does depart, Leeds will need at least two new midfielders to bolster their options in the middle of the park, and they will now have more leeway on what they can spend.
Leeds should move for previously linked free agent to help replace Adams
That said, a really shrewd move to help replace Adams would be to sanction a move for Han-Noah Massengo, who was mentioned as a target by Phil Hay back in July.
Massengo is still a free agent following his exit from Bristol City and so would provide a low-cost, but quality option in that position.
Due to his age, Leeds would have to pay a compensation fee to Bristol City in order to sign him, but it is unlikely to be for anything overly substantial.
Like Adams, Massengo is primarily a defensive midfielder, but you could argue the latter is actually better on the ball, which would suit Daniel Farke’s style.
Ethan Ampadu is very much first choice in that position at this stage, but it is impossible to rely on one player, for one role in a 46 game season as Leeds know better than anyone.
As such, Massengo would provide excellent cover and competition for Ampadu, while also freeing up funds to spend on the many other positions that need strengthening.
It is a deal that would tick a lot of boxes.
