‘It makes you wonder’… Rio Ferdinand baffled by Leeds United transfer decision

There have been some questionable decisions made by the Leeds United hierarchy over the years, but this could top the lot.

Daniel Farke will be hoping to get everything spot on if he’s given the chance to manage Leeds next season.

If presented with the opportunity, Farke will manage Leeds’ increased wage bill which could crop up as a problem in the upcoming window.

With the 49ers wanting to spend £100m, they should be sure not to waste their money, but with the wages going up this adds to more reason to be careful.

A way to balance this is by selling players, but Farke will want to avoid the same transfer mistake, which former Leeds player Rio Ferdinand is baffled by.

Rio Ferdinand baffled by Raphinha decision at Leeds United

The name on the footballing world’s lips at the moment is Raphinha.

Leeds fans will be thrilled to see the Brazilian thriving on the main stage, as Raphinha congratulated Leeds on promotion, showing his admiration for his former employers.

Of course, the Barcelona winger has moved on to bigger and better things since his £50m departure from Elland Road, with Ballon d’Or shouts now being associated with the 28-year-old.

With Raphinha equalling Lionel Messi records, it gives every reason as to why he should win the prestigious award.

But what Rio Ferdinand said to TNT Sports throws shade at Leeds, as he spoke during the coverage of Barcelona’s 3-3 draw with Inter Milan in the Champions League semi-final.

“It makes you wonder how he was ever allowed to leave the Premier League, the heights that he has hit now,” Ferdinand said.

“Some player.”

Raphinha was always going to leave Leeds

It’s clear that the Brazilian’s potential exceeded anything Leeds were doing in that moment when he left in 2022.

Raphinha has amassed 54 goal contributions in just 51 games showing the ridiculous level he is playing at, and after an assist vs Inter Milan he has now passed Messi through more goal contributions in a Champions League season.

It seems strange to involve a former Leeds star under these records, but his ferocious strike on Wednesday night shows exactly why he is where he is.

Although this effort went down as an own goal, the confidence oozing out of him to even attempt that shows why he was destined to leave Yorkshire.

Thierry Henry thinks Raphinha wins the Ballon d’Or, and every box is being ticked, as if Leeds were performing more in the top flight, it could’ve been so much more for Raphinha’s tenure.
