Leeds United have had their share of financial woes over the years. The Whites entered administration in 2007 but were promoted to the Premier League in 2020. Still, there’s been issues since then.
Leeds United’s modern history is certainly an intriguing one. Right now, the going is relatively good with Daniel Farke’s side sitting in 1st place of the Championship table, albeit with just a one point lead at the top after a 3-3 draw against Hull City in their last league outing.
Brighter days lie ahead, or at least the club and its fans hope. And despite recent seasons in the Premier League, there remains some financial constraints at Elland Road, as there are for all clubs these days.
There’s PSR and FFP regulations for clubs to abide by. Just last year there were talks of Leeds being handed a points deduction for PSR reasons, though the Whites avoided any such deduction.
But it’s been claimed that Leeds United won’t be making a big money move for January target Emmanuel Latte Lath, because of FFP.
Emmanuel Latte Lath to Leeds United played down because of FFP
Leeds United have been linked with Latte Lath at Middlesbrough. But the striker is seemingly on the verge of joining Atlanta United in the MLS, for what would be a league record signing at around £18million, possibly rising to £20million.
Middlesbrough want a replacement for Latte Lath before they sell him though, so the door remains open for the likes of Leeds United to make a move. Pundit Carlton Palmer though believes that Latte Lath to Leeds won’t happen because of FFP.
Palmer told Football League World: “It’s reported that MLS side Atlanta have made a record bid for Middlesbrough’s star Emmanuel Latte Lath. What they’re trying to do is steal Latte Lath from Leeds, Ipswich and West Ham who are all interested in the Ivory Coast international. But Middlesborough are yet to accept the bid and recognise importance of Latte Lath’s goals.
“The 26-year-old Ivorian has scored 10 goals in 26 games this season and the £20million offer would be a record for an MLS side, but it includes add-ons. Leeds United, Ipswich and West Ham have all shown interest, but Leeds may be out of this due to Financial Fair Play.”
Carlton Palmer’s FFP claim is rubbish, here’s why
It’s no secret that Leeds have had their share of financial issues over the years, and in the recent past too with the club having had to be careful not to breach any regulations and so on.
But right now, the club certainly seems to have a bit of wiggle room in terms of big money signings. In 2024 they sold Archie Gray to Spurs for pure profit, coming in at £30million, Crysencio Summerville at £34million, as well as making a £5million profit on Georginio Rutter who joined Brighton for £40million.
FFP matters were a bit more tense before those player sales but there’s not been any news or suggestions of any financial fears at Elland Road since, nor of any FFP worries like Palmer suggests here.
That said, Leeds spending £20million on Latte Lath right now seems highly unlikely. Farke likes his current options, but anther striker certainly wouldn’t go amiss.
