Gabriel Gudmundsson’s honest Leeds United deadline day response after missing out on Harry Wilson

Leeds United fans are disappointed at failing to make any last-minute signings and, like the club, are frustrated that Fulham pulled out of a last-minute deal to sign Harry Wilson.

Wilson, 28, has remained at Fulham where he is in the final year of his contract at Craven Cottage. Leeds made a deadline-day move but as we all know, Fulham pulled the plug on the Wales star’s move to Leeds.

That is despite Wilson wanting to join Leeds, according to Robbie Evans. Daniel Farke made it clear he was looking for new signings in attack after the 0-0 draw at Newcastle, but nothing has come to pass.

Farke will be frustrated at the lack of signings. Jeff Stelling is concerned for Leeds, and Micah Richards thinks “something is missing”. But what about the actual squad? Are the players worried for Leeds?

Gabriel Gudmundsson says if he is worried after Wilson disaster

Gabriel Gudmundsson has made a brilliant start to life at Leeds. Of the 10 summer additions, it is fair to say that Gudmundsson and Anton Stach have made the biggest impression, bought for £10m from Lille.

Currently on National Team duty with Sweden ahead of fixtures against Slovenia and Kosovo on Friday and Monday, Gudmundsson was asked on Sky Sports (03/09, 12.47PM) about Leeds’ lack of signings.

“It’s a question for the club, but I’m really satisfied with what we’ve got in the squad. You can also see that we’ve got four points against three very decent teams. I’m happy so far. Let’s see what the outcome is.”

The crucial miss Leeds made, Wilson would have solved it

Much has been made of Leeds signing some big players. Indeed, Gudmundsson is the only signing of the 10 arrivals that does not stand taller than 6ft. Though for a full-back, 5ft 11in is hardly a shrinking violet.

So, Leeds have signed some big players and an advantage of that is being able to score – and defend – from set-pieces. But Leeds failed to bring in a set-piece specialist, one to deliver set-pieces to them.

Joe Rothwell left the club in the summer, returning to Bournemouth before joining Rangers. So, Leeds needed a set-piece specialist and Wilson is that. Now, Leeds go into the season without that option.
