Micah Richards names the signing he’s surprised Leeds United didn’t make this summer

Leeds United fans have been left frustrated with their side’s late activity in the window, as Daniel Farke begged the transfer team to bring in some more additions – only to finish the window empty-handed.

Daniel Farke said he wanted one or two more attacking signings after the 0-0 draw against Newcastle, and understandably so. Leeds have scored just one goal in their opening three Premier League matches.

But Leeds failed to do anything after Farke’s comments, with the final addition coming in the form of full-back James Justin from Leicester for £10m. Leeds fans believe they needed another striker to score goals.

Farke wanted a versatile attacker and with Harry Wilson targeted on the final day, it was probably more of a winger that could play both sides or as a 10 that was on the agenda. Ultimately, Fulham pulled the plug.

Micah Richards delivers verdict on Leeds’ transfer window

Richards, who is renowned for his affection and close ties to Leeds, was asked about Farke’s side by Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football on Tuesday evening. The pundit says he understands Leeds fans’ concern.

While he described Leeds as being “energetic” so far, Richards believes Leeds should have signed a striker before the deadline even though he acknowledged Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha’s arrivals.

Yeah [Leeds fans are frustrated] because the manager kept saying they were going to bring in some more [signings]. Obviously, they have got Calvert-Lewin up front who made his debut the other night.

“I think Leeds have looked really interesting. Energetic. But they’ve sort of struggled a little bit. Gnonto been alright in spells, Dan James has done alright with his pace,” Richards summarised on Leeds, so far.

“I thought they might have got someone in up top. I know they’ve got Nmecha, but it seems like there is something missing. So they will be a little bit frustrated,” the former Man City and England player added.

Harry Wilson would have given Leeds something different

What Leeds lack, most importantly, is a player who can provide magic from set-pieces. It is well-known that Leeds have signed some big players. Indeed, nine of the 10 new Leeds arrivals are all over 6ft.

Only Gabriel Gudmundsson is smaller than 6ft, but at 5ft 11, the Sweden star is still tall for a left-back. So, Leeds have the aerial presence from set-pieces, but lack a set-piece taker. Anton Stach has taken them.

But at 6ft 4in, Leeds would rather Stach in the box. Of course, Leeds waved goodbye to Joe Rothwell and Manor Solomon, two players who often took corners. The signing of Wilson would have changed that.
