‘Stay awake’ – Daniel Farke makes 11th hour transfer claim as Leeds United boss sets deadline day goal

Daniel Farke has been hard at work this summer, signing a horde of new players at Leeds United. And the German says more are coming.

On Saturday, Leeds United picked up their fourth point of the season after drawing with Newcastle United at Elland Road.

Sean Longstaff shone as Leeds United drew 0-0 with Newcastle in the evening kick-off, leaving the Whites in 10th place of the Premier League table as things stand.

So far this season, so good for Leeds, barring that 5-0 demolition against Arsenal last week. Already, Leeds United have signed 10 new players, but speaking after the game, Farke insisted that he’s going to target another signing or two ahead of deadline day.

Daniel Farke says Leeds United want attacking signings

So far this summer, Leeds United have spent £100m on new players, and whilst Leeds have a much more balanced side, they’re still lacking firepower, as was evident in the game against Newcastle in which both sides really failed to lay a finger on the opposition goalkeeper.

Speaking on Sky Sports after the game, Farke was asked about the transfer state of play, with the summer transfer window shutting on September 1st next week. Farke made it clear that he’s going to work late into the morning on deadline day, with attacking signings being his focus.

He said: “In defence and midfield, goalkeeper position and full-back position, we’ve done really good business. But we spoke quite open and honest about it, we would need to add some more quality up front.”

Farke concluded: “We need to stay awake until the last hour of this window.”

Leeds United’s no.1 deadline target seems obvious

Whether Farke specifically wants a striker, winger, or a no.10 remains to be seen. But with Farke hoping Calvert-Lewin comes good this season, it could be a no.10 that is the focus.

All summer long, Leeds United have needed a new no.10, and an upgrade on the likes of Brenden Aaronson who held that position last season.

Several names have been linked throughout the summer in Emi Buendia and Gustavo Hamer to name a couple. But Bilal El Khannouss is Leeds United’s main transfer target right now.

Leeds United News recently revealed that the club have reopened talks to sign the Moroccan international, with Leicester City valuing El Khannouss at £35million after his release clause expired earlier in the summer.

Whether or not El Khannouss would provide the added attacking quality that Leeds desperately need is up for debate. But it would certainly be an upgrade on the current state of affairs.
