Jeff Stelling names the only Leeds United signing he classes as ‘good’ this summer

At the beginning of the summer, Leeds United fans would have been delighted with 10 new signings and more than £100m spent. But at this moment in time, Leeds supporters are frustrated.

Largely, Leeds fans are still reeling from the disappointment of failing to sign Harry Wilson on deadline day from Fulham. Everything was agreed, but Fulham pulled the plug in the final minutes on Monday.

There have been contrasting reports over Fulham’s decision to do that. Whether it was failing to agree a fee for Chelsea’s Tyrique George, or simply Fulham preferring to keep Wales star Wilson over George.

Daniel Farke wanted attacking signings after the 0-0 draw against Newcastle, but his plea has now gone unfulfilled. If anything, Farke now has more support because fans feel he has been hung out to dry.

Jeff Stelling names the one Leeds signing he thinks is ‘good’

Leeds look light in attack, having waved goodbye to Mateo Joseph, Manor Solomon, Patrick Bamford and Joe Gelhardt in the summer, only to bring in Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor and Lukas Nmecha.

Jack Harrison is back, but Leeds are light in quality and depth. Jeff Stelling told TalkSPORT on Tuesday that Leeds had the worst window and is worried for them, but praised the addition of Sean Longstaff.

“I can’t get excited over any of their signings. Leeds United. I just don’t know who is going to score the goals for them. I can’t get excited over James Justin, Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Noah Okafor and so on.

“For me, they needed strikers they could rely on to get goals. Calvert-Lewin, you can’t rely on. Sean Longstaff will do a good job in the middle of the park. I’m pretty sure of that. But I worry for Leeds.”

What Ally McCoist thinks about Leeds United’s transfer window

Leeds’ net spend was the seventh-highest in the league, even above Man City. But that was largely because the club only sold Sam Greenwood to Pogon for £3.5m, and Rasmus Kristensen to Frankfurt.

“Could not disagree,” McCoist said, when Stelling asked him if he agreed. “When you look at the newly-promoted sides, and I think it is fair to say, Sunderland and Leeds have a better opportunity than Burnley.

“Time will tell. I take your point with Leeds. There’s nothing exciting at all. Scoring goals is the absolute concern, absolute concern. You have to score to stay in the league. I’m not sure Leeds have done that.”

The proof is in the pudding. One goal in three Premier League games is not enough, but Leeds have come up against Arsenal and Newcastle in their first two games. Four points is solid, but it is a concern.
