‘Disappointing’… 28-year-old Leeds United player admits he’s had a very ‘strange’ season so far

There aren’t many players in Leeds United’s squad who can be disappointed with the seasons they have had so far.

The Whites currently sit on 72 points after 34 matches in a standard of promotion race that has never been seen before at this level, and it has taken big contributions from all the squad.

The likes of Joel Piroe and Pascal Struijk were among the key men during the first half of the campaign, while the turn of the New Year has seen Ilia Gruev, Junior Firpo and Patrick Bamford come to the fore.

Others such as Georginio Rutter, Ethan Ampadu, Crysencio Summerville and Joe Rodon have been superb all season, however there is one man who is a little disappointed with his year on a personal level – Connor Roberts.

Roberts, of course, only moved to Leeds on deadline day in January having not started for Burnley since October, despite playing a key role in their promotion last term.

Speaking on the latest episode of the Official Leeds United Podcast, Roberts believes it is ‘strange’ how things have panned out this season but is desperate to add another promotion to his CV.

Roberts disappointed by ‘strange’ season

He said: “Now I have to realise that it’s not going to be like it was three or four years ago and I was playing every single game and I didn’t really need to train or recover. It’s going to be different but all I can do is try my absolute best.

“It’s been a disappointing season of the back of a really good season, it has been strange to be honest, but I’m hoping end of the season I can say another promotion hopefully and go from there, see what happens.”

Having been named in the Championship TOTS last year, Roberts will have been hoping to play a key role in the Premier League at Turf Moor, but it just never materialised.

However, the same can be said for much of that Burnley team, including January Leeds target Manuel Benson. Their scattergun approach last summer has led to a dreadful season, with basically a whole new team.

Roberts, though, now has full focus on replicating what he achieved almost this time last year at Leeds, and he certainly has a key part to play here, even if he hasn’t started in the league yet.

Leeds only signed Roberts on a straight loan and so his future is uncertain in the summer, but he has seemingly already made it clear that Elland Road is where he wants to be long-term.
