Leeds United manager Daniel Farke will have had his eye on other games on Saturday. He might have even had an eye on the Premier League with a view to seeing what he might be up against next season.

Leeds United had the weekend off. But Daniel Farke and his in form side would’ve been preparing for what is a real promotion six-pointer against Sheffield United on Monday night.

The Blades welcome the Whites for an 8pm kick off live on Sky Sports. It promises to be a gruelling encounter for both sides but an exciting one for the neutral viewer, with Leeds and Sheffield United having certainly been the league’s best two teams so far.

The winner will take a huge step towards promotion to the Premier League. Already, Farke is drawing up a list of Leeds United transfer targets who’d bolster the side in the event of promotion, with more and more names mentioned alongside summer moves to Elland Road.

And there’s been some exciting names linked, too. Farke may also look for a bargain or two in the summer as well, with Kyle Walker-Peters mentioned as a target for Leeds United.

Southampton blown away as Leeds United target Kyle Walker-Peters struggles

On Saturday, Southampton hosted Brighton in a Premier League clash on the south coast. But the struggling Saints would fall to a 4-0 defeat at St Mary’s as their 2024/25 season in the Premier League continues to prove a miserable one, with just nine points to their name so far.

Former Leeds man Georginio Rutter was on the scoresheet for Brighton. On the receiving end, Walker-Peters had a long afternoon with Daily Echo handing him a 3/10 rating for his performance.

Journalist George Rees-Julian wrote: “Part of a Southampton defence which got pulled all over the pitch. A rare bright moment when he got into the box but that should not stand out as a highlight in the attacking third.”

So far this season, the 27-year-old Walker-Peters has featured 24 times in the Premier League with two assists to his name. The Saints have kept just two clean sheets all season.

What Georginio Rutter did during the Southampton vs Brighton game

Walker-Peters’ poor performance wasn’t the only thing of note for Leeds United during the game between Southampton and Brighton. Rutter’s goal and subsequent celebration was also noteworthy.

After scoring against Southampton, who beat Leeds United in the play-off final in 2024, Rutter did the ‘Leeds salute’ to the travelling Saints fans, who watched on as their season goes from bad to worse.

Southampton remain nailed on for relegation. But Walker-Peters could remain a Premier League player with Leeds looking good to earn promotion, and with other Premier League teams also keeping tabs on the right-back who’s out of contract at Southampton in the summer.
