That 2024 play-off final defeat against Southampton last year still rings true in the memories of many Leeds United fans. But the two teams could soon be swapping positions.
Following their promotion to the Premier League, Southampton have been simply awful. They could set the record for the lowest amount of points in a single Premier League season with just nine to their name so far.
Leeds United meanwhile are eyeing up the Championship points record which remains Reading’s 106 in 2005/06. The Whites are unbeaten in 15 and play 2nd place Sheffield United on Monday night.
Daniel Farke and his players have had to watch on this weekend. On Friday night Burnley thumped Sheffield Wednesday 4-0, then on Saturday, Sunderland lost 1-0 at home to Hull City.
Elsewhere on Saturday, Southampton suffered yet another heavy defeat in the Premier League. Ivan Juric’s side were beaten 4-0 at home to neighbours Brighton, with a certain Georginio Rutter on the scoresheet.

Leeds United fans love Georginio Rutter’s celebration vs Southampton
Brighton signed Rutter in a £40million deal last summer. The Frenchman became the third-most expensive player sale ever at Elland Road, though it’s not exactly been plain sailing for the 22-year-old since.
So far this season, Rutter has scored five goals and assisted two more in 25 Premier League games for Brighton. Since the turn of the year, though, Rutter has scored six for Brighton as his fortunes on the south coast appear to be turning.
He scored again on Saturday, and after doing so, he appeared to do the Leeds salute to the Southampton fans.
“He remembers,” posted one Leeds fan. Another said Rutter was “absolutely mocking it” against Southampton. This Leeds fan added: “Go on Rutter another nail in the coffin of one of the worst Premier League sides in history, and the salute to boot.”
“Glorious” said one Leeds fan. Meanwhile, this supporter said, following Rutter’s summer exit: “Some days I resent Rutter. Today I rate him based on THAT Leeds salute.”
Another comment read: “As if Rutter’s done the Leeds salute to the Southampton fans.”

Daniel Farke praised after Georginio Rutter loss at Leeds United
Rutter leaving was certainly a blow for Farke. As was the departures of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville. Speaking after Leeds thumped Watford 4-0, Hornets boss Tom Cleverley hailed Farke’s Leeds United despite those summer player exits.
Cleverley said: “You have to take your hat off to Daniel. What he lost in the summer was three massively talented players so the way they’ve dealt with that and found consistency, they’re the most dominating team in the league.”
Rutter is now finding his footing at Brighton after a tough start and Leeds fans will be pleased to see so, and pleased to see that he still has a place for Leeds in his heart, evident in his comical celebration against Southampton.
