Why Georginio Rutter’s move to Brighton from Leeds United is a new Championship record

On Monday night, Leeds United fans were frustrated even further as the club could do nothing but wave goodbye to Georginio Rutter as the Frenchman joined Brighton in a club-record deal.

The 22-year-old was a club-record signing for Leeds in January 2023 when The Whites agreed an initial £25m fee to sign him from Hoffenheim, and £10m in add-ons and now he’s Brighton’s record signing.

Angering Leeds supporters on social media, not only did Brighton initially announce Rutter’s arrival by posting “Don’t go to bed just yet”, but they then showed a video of Rutter typing it out himself (below).

Rutter becomes the eighth permanent sale made by Leeds and The 49ers this summer, following the likes of Archie Gray and Crysencio Summerville. But his move is a new Championship record as per Sky Sports.

Rutter breaks Championship record as he moves to Brighton

Rutter’s exit is said to have become the Championship’s second-biggest sale, more than the likes of James Maddison’s move to Tottenham from relegated Leicester or Nathan Ake joining Manchester City.

But they were both from clubs that had just been relegated to the Championship the season prior. The most-expensive sale was Romeo Lavia joining Chelsea from Southampton for a whopping fee of £58m.

Rutter though, is the biggest sale made by a Championship club in a season which is not immediately after relegation from the Premier League. It comes after Rutter had hand in 24 goals in 51 games.

Rutter’s Brighton teammate held previous Championship record

The next-biggest was Rutter’s new teammate Joao Pedro, joining Brighton from Watford for £30m. Watford had been relegated from the Premier League at the end of 2021-22, but Pedro stayed for a year.

Brighton made a brilliant start to the Premier League season on Saturday, beating Jack Harrison’s Everton 3-0 away from home and sit top of the table. Next up, Rutter’s new side host Manchester United.

Leeds meanwhile, face their second post-Rutter outing on Friday night as we go to Hillsborough to take on Danny Rohl’s Sheffield Wednesday after they were beaten by a Jack-Clarke inspired Sunderland 4-0.
