Leeds United need added firepower in numerous attacking areas next season, in spite of scoring 95 goals in the Championship.
The task at hand in the Premier League is survival, which requires difference-makers in both boxes. Leeds United have some outstanding players for the Championship but many of them won’t make it a step up.
It requires players with experience and know-how of top flight football, but particularly experience of English football’s top tier. One market to bolster their ranks in that sense is via free transfers from other Premier League sides.
They don’t all have to be the flashiest players but solid professionals with an understanding of the league to add some character and quality to the dressing room. A player who has been linked to Leeds in recent days is Callum Wilson.

Leeds fans react to Callum Wilson transfer link
The 49ers are looking at Premier League targets, and the Newcastle United striker has 88 Premier League goals in his career, with each of them coming for AFC Bournemouth or Newcastle. Now 33, Wilson hasn’t scored so far this season and injuries have started to catch up with him.
Leeds are among the clubs interested in Wilson. Of course, any move for £110k-per-week Wilson is not guaranteed but the latest reports state Wilson is again a target for Leeds and for Daniel Farke on a free transfer.
Leeds could seal a transfer for Wilson to be either their starting striker or the back up player, but a number of fans are cynical about the prospect of bringing Wilson in at his age and with his injury record.
Another response read: “Too expensive for a backup. Too injury prone to be a starter.”
One fan added: “We do not need squad players especially at that price. We need 1st team contenders who are fit to play. Save the money and keep Bamford. Wilson isn’t an upgrade on Bamford. F— sake. This attitude did us last time!”
Whereas others simplified their reasons as to why Leeds should avoid bringing Wilson in, even on a free. Another said: “Too many injuries, 33. Hard pass.”

Callum Wilson’s goalscoring record is not enough for Leeds United to sign him
Given his huge wages, Wilson could be a huge Leeds mistake this summer. He is not the player he once was in his 20s and early 30s, having struggled for form and fitness at Newcastle for a couple of seasons now.
Of course, his career goalscoring record is impressive. However, Leeds need quality and availability at an affordable price. They cannot afford to waste resources on a player rooted to the treatment table consistently.
| Team | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| Coventry City | 55 | 23 | 7 |
| Kettering Town | 17 | 1 | 0 |
| Tamworth | 3 | 1 | 2 |
| AFC Bournemouth | 187 | 67 | 28 |
| Newcastle United | 128 | 49 | 11 |
| England | 9 | 2 | 1 |
The Whites need a starting striker with more mobility than Joel Piroe, the hold-up and link-up play of Patrick Bamford, but more experience than Mateo Joseph. Those profiles of centre-forward don’t grow on trees, nor do they come cheap.
