23-year-old Leeds loanee plays just five minutes in club’s crucial relegation clash, not started since October

Leeds United loanee Brenden Aaronson’s individual struggles at Union Berlin continued last night as he got just five minutes off the bench.

Union were facing a crucial relegation clash against Koln who sat just one place below them heading into the game, having won just once in the league since August against Max Wober’s Borussia Monchengladbach.

Aaronson has had a tough time since leaving Elland Road on loan, receiving frequent criticism from the German press for his lack of physicality and quality in the final third.

It has even been reported that Aaronson’s loan could be terminated in January amid both his and Union’s struggles, with Daniel Farke even said to be ‘open’ to the possibility of it happening.

And although Union ran out 2-0 winners against Koln, thing don’t seem to be looking too bright for Aaronson, as he was handed just the final five minutes with the game all but over.

Aaronson Leeds return seems even more likely

In an interview last month, Aaronson left the door open for a return to Leeds at some point and it now wouldn’t be a surprise if it happened earlier than everyone expected.

It is thought that Aaronson and Farke are set for crucial talks over his future in the coming weeks ahead of January, and as previously mentioned, he thinks he could be a boost to the squad.

Leeds are in need of a new number 10 next month having opted against signing an alternative to Nadiem Amiri, and if the funds are not there, then perhaps Aaronson could be the solution.

However, Leeds would clearly be getting a player extremely low on confidence, with his last goal at club level having come all the way back in August 2022 against Chelsea.

Last night was Union’s last match until after the turn of the New Year as Germany heads for its winter break, and it will certainly be interesting as to what happens between now and then.
