Brenden Aaronson says he has not ruled out a return to Leeds United despite joining Union Berlin on loan in the summer.
Aaronson was speaking in an interview with the Athletic, where he discussed a range of different topics, including his start to life at Union, struggles at Leeds and the possibility of going back to Elland Road.
The 23-year-old was one of eight members of last season’s first team squad to take advantage of loan clauses in their contract and leave after Leeds’ relegation from the Premier League.
In fact, Aaronson was actually one of the first to make the move and in the end, did not have to report back for pre-season training as he secured a move to Union.
Those who did decide to leave Leeds on loan in the summer were met with some serious criticism by supporters, so much so, that is difficult to see a way back for any of them in West Yorkshire.
Aaronson open to Leeds return
However, Aaronson has insisted that the door is still open for a return to Leeds at some point, as he believes it is ‘not done or dusted’, and that he still loves the club.
He said: “As soon as the season was over, Union came in, probably three days after (Leeds) being relegated. Right away, they wanted me. And as a player, feeling wanted is probably the biggest thing in where you wanna go.
“That’s another reason why I went to Leeds — they wanted me really bad. From that January when Marcelo [Bielsa] was there, to when Jesse came, they stayed in contact. For sure, it’s possible [going back to Leeds].
“It’s not done and dusted or anything like that. I love the club. I love the guys that I was there with, the connections I made. It was just tough the way it ended.
“I felt like this was the best decision that I could make — playing in the Bundesliga and playing in the Champions League — to help my career and get me better. So that’s why I made the decision.”
Difficult to see a way back for Aaronson
Aaronson has not exactly pulled up any trees since moving to Union and so if Leeds are to be promoted, they are probably going to need better than him in order to stay up.
Despite the criticism he faced towards the end of last season, and in the window, it is decent to hear that he does not hold any animosity towards the club.
Clearly Aaronson has a great attitude towards his football, but ultimately it may come down to ability rather than the fact he left on loan, as to why he shouldn’t get another chance at Leeds.
