Brenden Aaronson has really struggled in the early stages of his loan spell at Union Berlin after leaving Leeds United in the summer – and German outlet Fussball Transfers gave their verdict on him, so far.
Aaronson, 23, played 40 times for Leeds last season. Despite a promising start, his spell at Elland Road died off towards the end – his confidence seemingly shot. A lack of physicality the reason to blame.
He has since gone on loan to Union, who have been busy in the summer after securing a place in the Champions League. Aaronson used the relegation loan clause to escape Leeds, until next summer.
Certainly, at this stage, he will not be signing permanently. Aaronson has played 11 times for Union, failing to score or assist. He has picked up a red card. Union meanwhile, have lost 11 games in a row.
Fussball Transfers rated Union’s players so far as we creep closer to the midway point of the season. They handed Aaronson a rating of 5, which as per the German grading system, is the second worst.
“Brenden Aaronson was once incredibly expensive. In 2022, Salzburg went to Leeds United for €33m (29m). After relegation from the Premier League, Union took the flexible offensive man on loan.
“So far, Aaronson has turned out to be too small on the chest for the intense and physical Union game. After eleven appearances there is still no scorer point,” Fussball Transfers reported, on Aaronson.

There is a player in Aaronson and luckily enough for him, he is still young enough at 23 to turn things around. But if he is to stance a chance in European football, he needs to become so much stronger.
He needs to be able to shrug players off the ball, rather than be shrugged. That will take time, and more experience. But it depends whether Leeds are willing to offer that – or another club will look to buy him.
