Who is Cameron Archer? Meet the former Sheffield United striker who could be the final piece to Leeds United promotion

Leeds United are attempting to sign Southampton striker Cameron Archer before January transfer deadline day and here’s all you need to know.

After nearly a month of very little action in the January transfer window, Leeds United have seemingly burst into life with just a couple of days remaining.

Though Daniel Farke did say he was happy with his squad ahead of the window, Leeds have attempted to make reinforcements in defence and attacking midfield.

Pascal Struijk’s injury not being as bad as first feared lessened the need for a new centre-back like Nico Elvedi but speculation has now grown surrounding Newcastle left-back Matt Targett.

On the attacking front, Leeds lost out on both Emi Buendia and Louie Barry to Bayer Leverkusen and Hull City, respectively.

However, there’s now been a late approach to sign Southampton striker Cameron Archer and here is everything you need to know.

Cameron Archer to Leeds United transfer rumours

Other than recent links with Kelechi Iheanacho, Leeds haven’t shown much interest in signing a striker this month.

However, with Patrick Bamford’s injury issues continuing, Farke may want to bring in some additional firepower to ensure Leeds get over the line and return to the Premier League. Enter Archer.

Leeds have been interested in Archer before, losing out on his signature to title rivals Sheffield United in 2023, but he was unable to keep the Blades up and the striker moved to Southampton last summer.

His Premier League struggles have continued on the south coast, with Archer scoring just twice in 21 games, but he does have another three in the Carabao Cup.

It has been reported on Thursday that Leeds have approached Southampton to sign Archer on loan, but that it was rejected with Saints reluctant to let him go.

However, that doesn’t mean the move is dead as Archer is reportedly keen on the switch.

Graeme Bailey on Cameron Archer to Leeds

Transfer expert Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that Leeds are still ‘pushing’ for the move and what it would take to sign him.

“Leeds are pushing for Cameron Archer – he is a young player with so much potential, they saw that at rivals Middlesbrough not long ago. Leeds will have to give an obligation based on promotion,” he said.

“They are getting a player they can invest in the long-term with, this is not a stop-gap option although he will immediately enhance their charge to the Premier League.”
