Julian Weigl has appeared on Leeds United’s radar over the last few months as a possible signing.

Daniel Farke has had a big say in this deal happening, with Weigl and Farke working together at Borussia Mönchengladbach.

Farke called Weigl a ‘great footballer’ with the Leeds boss knowing of his ability, which could endorse a move to Elland Road.

The 29-year-old has had an uncertain future in Germany ever since Leeds contacted Gladbach about Weigl.

It’s gone quiet on that front since then, but now a new update has emerged which could really get this transfer saga going.

What foreign media say about Julian Weigl joining Leeds United

The midfielder is an experienced head who has enjoyed the majority of his career in Germany, aside from his brief spell at Benfica.

Weigl might feel it’s time for a new challenge after Gladbach had another mediocre season, finishing 10th in the Bundesliga.

It seems like the German club are already preparing for life without the German international, as Gladbach have identified a replacement for Weigl.

Well, now Leeds might have got a huge boost in landing Weigl after media from Germany gave an update.

The Print Edition of Rheinische Post (23/05/25) states that Farke ‘could lure’ Weigl to Elland Road.

His contract lasts until 2028, and if he continues, the report claims he’s likely to face tough competition for a place in the starting lineup; this would no doubt give Leeds more hope of securing his services.

Farke would love to reunite with a player he got on with so well in his short stay back in Germany.

The Leeds boss will need players he can trust, and from a defensive midfield point of view, Weigl is a pair of safe hands when it comes to being a leader in the middle of the park.

Gladbach will have to solidify their replacement first, but the Whites won’t give up easily with Farke having major involvement in transfers.

This means that, going off the history of signing Ao Tanaka and Josuha Guilavogui, Farke will want to explore the Bundesliga even more, and Weigl could just be the starting point.
