What German media said about Leeds United target Nico Elvedi on Tuesday night after heavy 5-1 defeat

Nico Elvedi is currently on Leeds United’s radar whether that be a move this month or a transfer come the end of the season but on Tuesday night, he struggled a 5-1 hammering.

Switzerland international Elvedi worked under Leeds United manager Daniel Farke during the latter’s time as Gladbach manager during the 2022-23 season. At the end of that season, Farke then joined Leeds.

Leeds are lacking cover in the middle of the defence. Joe Rodon and Pascal Struijk remain first choice, and Max Wober is now playing back-up but the Austrian is being linked with a move away and has injuries.

The left-footed defender has struggled with knee issues all season and come the end of the season, it is more than likely that Leeds may need to replace Wober. It could be Elvedi replaces old teammate Wober.

Media rate Nico Elvedi as he struggles in 5-1 Gladbach defeat

Ralph Hasenhuttl is impressing as Wolfsburg manager, the former Southampton manager joining the German side after Hasenhuttl was linked with Leeds following the sacking of Jesse Marsch in 2023.

Joining Wolfsburg in March 2024, Hasenhuttl has gone on to win 15 of his 28 games in charge and on Tuesday night, perhaps his best yet. A huge 5-1 win over Gladbach with Elvedi struggling in defence.

Rheinsche Post gave Elvedi a rating of 5/10 as he and Gladbach proved helpless in stopping Wolfsburg: “He was mainly called upon to build up play in the first 45 minutes, as Wolfsburg did not move forward. He therefore had by far the most ball contacts of all Borussia players in the first half,” the RP reported.

“Saved Gerhardt’s solo run at the last second. He cut an unfortunate figure before the 0-2 when he was tunnelled by wind, but it got even worse: he simply let Nmecha run away behind him for the fifth goal.”

Daniel Farke told how much Nico Elvedi would cost Leeds

Reports say Leeds would need to part with a £10m fee to sign Elvedi in the coming weeks, with Farke said to be keen on doing a deal “now”. Leeds are also said to be leading Wolves in the race to land Elvedi.

But Gladbach manager Gerardo Seoane is happy with Elvedi. The defender, despite his performance on Tuesday, is a key player for Gladbach and is closing in on the top 10 of Gladbach’s most appearances.

Realistically, promotion to the Premier League would get a deal done for Elvedi. But he is clearly open to joining Leeds and rejoining Farke, whether that becomes a reality depends on how Leeds do this term.
