Leeds United’s search for a new striker in the January transfer window has now entered the last five hours with Adam Armstrong linked with a late move to Elland Road.
A deal to sign England U21 striker Cameron Archer looks dead as the January window draws to a close. But Leeds have also been linked with his teammate Adam Armstrong, after his 24 goals last season.
Armstrong has lost his place in the Southampton side in recent weeks and has emerged as an option for the Championship’s elite. Armstrong was offered to Middlesbrough but Boro chose to turn a deal down.
Indeed, Southampton were asking for a big portion of Armstrong’s £60,000-a-week wages to be paid as well as a big loan fee. Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that Sunderland were rivalling Boro for him.

Sunderland will not be signing Leeds target Adam Armstrong
Leeds fans will of course remember Armstrong not simply as one of the Championship’s best players last term, but that he scored the winner against Leeds in the play-off final at Wembley to break Leeds hearts.
With Boro ruled out due to the cost, The Sun’s Jack Rosser gave an update on Sunderland’s interest and possible move to sign £15m Armstrong. He says a move is unlikely after Sunderland made a bid.
“Sunderland have made a loan bid for Southampton’s Adam Armstrong, though the boyhood Newcastle fan unlikely to join,” Rosser reported. Of the teams linked with Armstrong, it appears only Leeds are left.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook shared Armstrong stance on Sunderland
Armstrong came through Newcastle United’s academy and while he never really had a chance with The Toon, his love for Newcastle remains. Indeed, Alex Crook has shared Armstrong’s stance on Sunderland.
He says that Armstrong does not want to join his boyhood club’s rivals: ” Sunderland have shown interest in Southampton striker Adam Armstrong but the boyhood Newcastle fan not keen to join bitter rivals.”
Graham Smyth has reported a move for Armstrong to Leeds is unlikely, but many other reporters have said that Leeds’ interest is genuine. One to keep an eye on going into the last four hours of the window.
