Leeds United are now reportedly looking at a move for Southampton striker Cameron Archer but are not the only Championship club to be linked with a move for the Saints ace.

With a deal now looking unlikely for Southampton’s Archer, Leeds are said to have turned their attention towards Adam Armstrong. It comes after Armstrong clocked up a massive 37 goals and assists last term.

Graeme Bailey has told LeedsUnited.News that Middlesbrough and Sunderland are also interested in the former Newcastle striker. Indeed, Bailey has told us that Armstrong leaving is ‘more likely’ than Archer.

Now, an update regarding Armstrong’s possible deadline-day exit. Indeed, it has been claimed that Boro have been offered the chance to sign Armstrong before tonight’s 11pm deadline but have turned it down.

Why Middlesbrough have turned down chance to sign Armstrong

The Gazette Live (03/02, 1.25PM) say Boro were offered the chance to bring Armstrong back to the North East. However, they have chosen to reject that opportunity because they were told to pay a huge amount.

A massive loan fee for Armstrong, while also covering all of his wages. According to Spotrac, Armstrong is on a massive £60,000 a week at Southampton following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

Middlesbrough are already signing a striker on Leeds radar

Kelechi Iheanacho was loosely linked with Leeds earlier this month. The 55-time Nigeria international has struggled at Sevilla since Victor Orta raided Leicester City after promotion to lure him to the Spanish side.

Just nine La Liga outings and no goals later, and Iheanacho is heading back to England to join Michael Carrick’s Boro. Middlesbrough then may not need another striker with Iheanacho heading to Teesside.

It could hand Leeds a boost as a direct rival to land Armstrong have fallen out of the race. The chances of Newcastle-supporting Armstrong joining Sunderland also seems unlikely, given the rivalry between both.
