Simon Jordan settles the debate on why Dominic Calvert-Lewin has chosen Leeds United over Sunderland

Leeds United are closing in on the signing of Dominic Calvert-Lewin on a free transfer and if reports are to be believed, the club have elbowed Sunderland aside to land his signature.

This summer, there has been a growing trend between Leeds and Sunderland. The two sides have often been linked with the same players, which is not unusual for two promoted clubs as they scour the market.

But, of Sunderland’s 11 signings, four were on Leeds’ list before Sunderland made their move. A £22m bid was made for Habib Diarra and Noah Sadiki himself confirmed Leeds had made an offer to sign him.

Both midfielders have ended up on Wearside, while Marc Guiu has joined on loan from Chelsea after being linked with Leeds. Reinildo Mandava held talks with both clubs before choosing to join Sunderland.

Now, Leeds have garnered some revenge. David Ornstein reports that Dominic Calvert-Lewin is set to undergo his medical before agreeing a move to Leeds. It is believed a deal will be done inside 24 hours.

Interestingly, amid the reports of Calvert-Lewin joining Leeds, transfer expert Ben Jacobs reported that Calvert-Lewin had actually turned Sunderland down in favour of a move to Elland Road this summer.

Now, reports have emerged that he is set to compete with Joel Piroe and Lukas Nmecha up front. As is the way of the football world, Calvert-Lewin’s Leeds debut could come against Everton on Monday night.

Speaking to TalkSPORT on Wednesday following the news of Calvert-Lewin choosing Leeds over a move to Sunderland, Simon Jordan said Leeds are a bigger club than Sunderland. That’s why he’s chosen Leeds.

With due respect to Sunderland, Leeds are a bigger club than Sunderland. Leeds have been in the Premier League in recent times, Sunderland haven’t – albeit they’ve done well to get back up,” Jordan declared.

“In terms of Calvert-Lewin, it says a lot that the only two clubs that wanted him were two promoted sides. He’s a free transfer, costs nothing, and yet only two promoted sides want him,” Jordan continued today.

Is Dominic Calvert-Lewin just another Patrick Bamford, or not?

There is concern among the Leeds fanbase regarding the signing of Calvert-Lewin. His injury record is poor and in two of the last four Premier League seasons, Calvert-Lewin has only played 17 matches.

Some will argue that Bamford’s lack of minutes in the final season was down to Daniel Farke reducing his status in the pecking order and that is true, though his injury issues meant he was not relied upon.

Calvert-Lewin continued to be used by Everton, even while in the Premier League, when he had returned from an injury. There is a significant difference between Bamford and Calvert-Lewin’s game time.
