Leeds United are looking good in defence, and with the introduction of Sebastiaan Bornauw, it’s only getting better.

Leeds will surely soon announce the signing of Wolfsburg defender Bornauw, who is set to join the Whites for £5m.

The 26-year-old Belgian hasn’t had a glittering career but has proved to be a solid option over in Germany when relied upon.

Before Wolfsburg, the centre-back played for Cologne and learned his trade at Anderlecht, but after just 15 games played this season, his fitness might raise concerns.

But he must be a decent capture as Daniel Farke tried to sign Bornauw before, and on top of that, he’s been compared to a Champions League winner.

Future Leeds United signing Sebastiaan Bornauw was compared to Champions League winner

Standing at 6’3, Bornauw, along with Jaka Bijol, is creating quite the stature in defence, as Farke is seemingly building a team of giants.

But the Belgian clearly possesses the attributes Farke is looking for to improve his Leeds team, and certainly provides that aerial threat when scoring.

For £5m, you can’t really complain with a player going into the peak of his career, and adding to this, Bornauw is a Belgian international.

Even more impressive though, the defender has a comparison which will boost his likeability from the fanbase.

When speaking to the Bundesliga website in 2020, Bornauw spoke on the comparisons he gets from Champions League-winning and former Bayern stalwart Daniel van Buyten.

“I still have a long way to go, he had a great career! It’s hard to be compared to him, but he had his career, I’m going to try to have mine,” Bornauw said.

“It’s an honour though, because I like him a lot as a person and as a player, so it really is an honour.”

Leeds will be happy that Bornauw emulates the legendary Bayern centre-back, and hopefully will hit the ground running.

But it’s become clear that not only is the Belgian similar to his compatriot, but he’s also had a big say in the Leeds transfer.

That’s because van Buyten is Bornauw’s agent, and will have played his part in bringing the 26-year-old to Elland Road.

With the comparisons, van Buyten was known for his goalscoring from defence so the hope is that Bornauw can do the same.

With three signings through the door, everything is going swimmingly at Leeds, as three could turn into more with six players looking to join Leeds.
