With little over two hours left to go in the January transfer window, it looks as if Leeds United will fail to make any new signings – but could have easily let a key player leave.
The possibility of signing Cameron Archer is fading by the second. While Adam Armstrong has rejected a move to Sunderland and Middlesbrough cannot afford the star, Graham Smyth rubbished a possible deal.
However, Leeds might have pushed harder for Archer, Armstrong or another striker had they received a larger offer for Mateo Joseph this month. Real Betis tabled a bid of £10m to sign Spain U21 man Joseph.

New claim regarding Mateo Joseph after Real Betis bid tabled
Signed by Victor Orta as a teenager, Joseph has finally broken into the Leeds side on a permanent basis this season under Daniel Farke. It is even reported that Joseph was actually keen on a move to Spain.
But Betis’ priority was Columbus Crew striker Cucho Hernandez. Now, Fabrizio Romano says Betis are set to sign the striker: “Real Betis are set to sign Cucho Hernández as new striker, agreement completed.”
So, even if Leeds were willing to sell Joseph to Betis for a bigger fee, it seems like Joseph will remain at Elland Road and certainly won’t be joining the La Liga outfit. Certainly, Joseph is staying put until June.
Joe Donnohue says Betis not the only side interested in Joseph
While he has only scored three goals this season, Joseph is seen as a future gem. Josuha Guilavogui described Joseph as “charismatic” and a future captain at Leeds, but that is of course if he stays at Leeds.
Yorkshire Evening Post reporter says Betis were not the only club to look at Joseph this month. Indeed, numerous La Liga clubs made their interest in Joseph known over the last few weeks for the Leeds ace.
“Leeds United have turned down a £10m approach for Mateo Joseph from La Liga club Real Betis. Not the only Spanish club to enquire during this window, but he’s staying at Elland Road,” Donnohue reported.
Even if Betis returned with a big offer in the next couple of hours, The Whites are likely to reject the move given there is limited time to replace the forward. Joseph has a contract at Elland Road until June 2028.
