Leeds United fans are expecting Adam Underwood and the Elland Road transfer team to try and bring in one or two attacking reinforcements in January, but one striker on the list is now unavailable.

Having failed to get a deal for Harry Wilson or Facundo Buonanotte over the line in the summer, it is clear that even Leeds feel they need additions in the final third. Especially now, with Dan James out injured.

Which position do Leeds United need to strengthen most in January?

Explain why!

The winger is currently scheduled to be missing until the end of January, but by chance he gets back to his best and comes through rehab, the chances are James might not be ready to go until March.

Leeds need attacking reinforcements and part of the reason for Farke’s switch to 3-5-2, is his lack of quality options out wide. One attacker linked with Leeds in recent weeks is Milan’s Santiago Gimenez.

Leeds interested in Santiago Gimenez after previous interest

Reports emerged in November that Mexico star Gimenez could leave Milan in January, just a year after joining the Italian giants from Feyenoord for a whopping £32m. He’s struggled to get going at Milan.

A player who starred in the Netherlands with Feyenoord, Gimenez has been asked to make a giant step up and forced to play rotationally. LeedsUnited.News suggested Gimenez as a possible winter signing.

Then, reports from Italy said that Leeds were considering a move for Gimenez in January, and that they had started putting the early blocks in place to land the forward. A deal would likely have been a loan.

Leeds have been linked with Gimenez in the past, too. Back in 2024, before the play-off final and with promotion still a possibility, Leeds were linked with a move to sign the Milan striker. But now? No.

Fabrizio Romano update ends any Leeds chance of Gimenez deal

Indeed, Leeds have been thwarted in their attempts to lure Gimenez to Elland Road ahead of January. The Milan striker has missed his side’s last six Serie A games and now, a decision has been made on his injury.

Indeed, Romano said on X: “AC Milan staff and Giménez, on the verge of decision to proceed with surgery following ankle problems. Mexican striker could proceed as he’s been out in the recent weeks.”

With surgery now expected, it not only rules Leeds out of a move for Gimenez, but it ends any chance of Gimenez leaving Milan a year after his move. He is set to remain with the Rossoneri until the summer.
