Daniel Farke could use a new striker at Leeds.
The German has been reliant on Lukas Nmecha and Dominic Calvert-Lewin so far this season, with the pair largely performing well and netting four goals each.
However, Nmecha is currently injured and has a worrying fitness history, as does Calvert-Lewin, so it would make sense to bring in another option this winter.
A story from Tutto Mercato Web now claims that Leeds have decided to do exactly that as the 49ers set their sights on Santiago Gimenez – but it sounds like there’s still a long way to go.
Leeds United declare interest in Santiago Gimenez but deal in ’embryonic phase’
The Italian news outlet believe AC Milan have now decided to get rid of the Mexico international in January, after he scored only seven goals in 30 games since a £30m move from Feyenoord in January 2025.
Which player would you be happy for Leeds to sell in January to fund their transfer business? Let us know in the comments… 🤔💰
The likes of Joel Piroe and Willy Gnonto are struggling to force their way into Farke's plans.
That is despite the fact Gimenez is desperate to stay – as his own father recently revealed.
Tutto Mercato Web state that Leeds are definitely interested in the AC Milan No.7 but the deal is currently in an ’embryonic phase’ – suggesting the Whites have only recently expressed their admiration.
Gimenez was offered to Leeds last week as AC Milan attempt to find a buyer for the man born in Buenos Aires – where Joe Rodon is bizarrely very popular right now – and it seems those at Elland Road have now decided to act on the market opportunity.
Tutto Mercato Web do, however, add that West Ham are also keen to sign the 24-year-old.
Santiago Gimenez deal is more likely to be an initial loan move for Leeds United
Tutto Mercato Web do not mention how much Leeds might end up paying for Gimenez in January, and reports from elsewhere make us believe it is likely to be an initial loan deal – if an agreement does materialise.
Who starts up front with Dominic Calvert-Lewin? 📈
Listen to what Daniel Farke had to say ahead of Brentford.
Graham Smyth revealed earlier this week that loans are likeliest for Leeds this winter – with PSR concerns limiting what the 49ers can do in the market.
There is also the matter of Gimenez struggling at AC Milan, so Leeds will presumably be hesitant to invest a significant amount of money on the forward without having a trial run first – especially as the Premier League is widely considered to be much more difficult than Serie A.
