Leeds United told bad news in pursuit of Igor Paixao from Feyenoord, ‘Arriving late’

Igor Paixao looked like he was set to be the next name to arrive at Leeds United this summer, and he may well have been the club’s most expensive signing of the summer window.

Whether or not Leeds United break their club transfer record to sign Igor Paixao from Feyenoord remains to be seen. Paixao was first linked with Leeds United earlier in the summer, and reports in the last week or so have fuelled a potential move to Elland Road with reports that Leeds United have submitted a £30m bid to sign Paixao.

It comes after Marseille reportedly saw a final bid rejected for Paixao, falling short of the Dutch side’s valuation which is understood to be closer to the £35m mark. Last season, the 25-year-old winger scored 16 goals and assisted 10 more in 34 Eredivisie games for Robin van Persie’s side.

It is also understood that Paixao is tempted to join a Premier League side this summer, with Leeds United the team making the most effort as things stand.

Marseille may have pipped Leeds United in transfer race for Igor Paixao

Guillaume Pacini is now reporting that Marseille appear to be ‘very close to finalising’ a deal for Paixao despite Leeds’ attempt to sign the player in a deal worth 30 plus 5 million euros. Pacini adds that ‘the feeling is that the club (Marseille) is arriving late in this matter’, although it appears the Ligue 1 side have just about pipped Leeds to the signing.

Interestingly, separate reports claim that Roma had also joined the race for Paixao, but Pacini suggests that Roma have now completed their summer transfer business and won’t be signing Paixao. For Leeds, it certainly seems like the end of the road. But as has happened here, things can change quickly.

What Dutch insiders are saying about Leeds United transfer target Igor Paixao

Earlier in the month it was revealed that Leeds United had proposed a deal to Paixao, selling their future project to the winger in a bid to lure him to West Yorkshire this summer.

And with Paixao understood to be keen to move to the Premier League, and with Leeds now having a bid on the table, we were expecting to see reports of a move to Elland Road pick up in the coming days.

But the price tag was a sticking point. Leeds seemingly remain £5million short of Feyenoord’s asking price, and insiders in the Netherlands suggested that Paixao is most likely to remain at Feyenoord this summer.

Marseille, seemingly out of nowhere, have managed to put together the funds to sign Paixao this summer and he now looks more likely to move there instead of Leeds, in what will come as a huge blow to Farke who seemed very keen on the player.
