Leeds United could be about to raid one of their potential Premier League rivals for next season, in what would be a bid to ready themselves to fight the drop.

After a rocky few weeks in the Championship Leeds United are back atop the table, and back on track to secure automatic promotion from the Championship.

For a number of months now it’s been Leeds, Burnley and Sheffield United in the mix for automatic promotion. For the bulk of that time it’s been Burnley who’ve been in 3rd place.

But Sheffield United’s run of three-straight defeats has them in 3rd now and five points behind Leeds United and Burnley on 88 points ahead of the next round of fixtures, with four games to go.

Chris Wilder lost his rag against Plymouth Argyle last time out in scenes that made for great viewing from a Leeds United perspective, with Daniel Farke having kept his cool, albeit with his ‘Leeds United will be 100% promoted‘ claim having made for a nervy run-in.

Leeds United add Newcastle United goalkeeper Nick Pope to summer shortlist

With Leeds United now edging towards sealing promotion and towards fulfilling Farke’s 100% verdict, news of new potential signings are starting to emerge once again and Newcastle United’s former England international Nick Pope has become a target for Leeds United.

Illan Meslier has been axed by Leeds United with Karl Darlow stepping in. But the 24-year-old Darlow isn’t the long-term option for Leeds who look set to buy a new no.1 altogether this summer and it’s reported that Leeds United like Pope, who cost Newcastle £10million in 2022.

The 32-year-old appears to face an uncertain summer at St James’ Park where Eddie Howe also looks set to sign a new no.1. Pope has kept just five clean sheets in 21 Premier League games this season.

Leeds United also want two of Nick Pope’s Newcastle United teammates

Pope isn’t the only one at St James’ Park who could make the switch to Elland Road in the summer with Farke having shown interest in a couple of Magpies players this season.

In the January transfer window it was Matt Targett. Reports at one point even claimed that Targett was set to join Leeds United although they were premature, but Leeds United have retained an interest in Targett who also looks set to leave this summer.

Callum Wilson is another who looks set to leave and who could move to West Yorkshire. Another former England international, the 33-year-old sees his contract expire this summer and Leeds United have been linked with a move for Wilson.

We could yet see three Premier League-proven players in Pope, Targett and Wilson all join Leeds United this summer. First though, Leeds need to get over the promotion line.
