Callum Wilson tells Leeds United his preferred transfer destination

With promotion to the Premier League firmly on the cards, Leeds United have been linked with some big names ahead of the summer window and one of those is Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson.

Adam Pope has predicted Leeds United will make six big signings at least if promoted, and it could well cost the club over £100m. Phil Hay thinks RedBull and The 49ers give Leeds a good chance of survival.

Plenty of names are being linked with Leeds and England international Wilson is about to see his contract expire at Newcastle United. Newcastle do have the option to trigger an extension in the forward’s deal.

But, given his lack of game time and injuries, the chances are that Wilson will leave on a free and Leeds are among the clubs interested in Wilson. Now, the striker’s preferred destination has been revealed.

Leeds United get green light as Callum Wilson eyes move

Of course, any move for £110k-a-week Wilson hinges on whether the club can achieve promotion at the end of the season. Leeds remain top of the Championship table, but only on goal difference right now.

Graeme Bailey told LeedsUnited.News that Wilson will leave Newcastle United instead of an extension being triggered. While he has offers from elsewhere, he wants to remain in the Premier League.

“Callum Wilson is leaving. I am told he wants to stay in the Premier League, he does have other options around the world, but he would like another go in England,” Bailey told LeedsUnited.News this week.

Why Callum Wilson is a smart purchase, on one condition

Tony Mowbray’s comments after Leeds’ 1-1 draw with West Brom were alarmingly honest but bang on the money. He told reporters that Leeds would need to spend the best part of £200m to survive.

Ipswich, Leicester and Southampton spent big in the summer after promotion but it hasn’t worked, and they look set to be relegated. The trio will be left out of pocket and back where they started next term.

Leeds have to use that as an example and perhaps, instead of spending big, it is best to bring in proven players like Wilson who will improve this Leeds side without breaking the bank – but there is an issue.

Signing Wilson on a 12-month deal is the smart play. His wages will be big, so a year will see him go if Leeds are relegated. But Leeds must make a decision regarding his injury issues, which have persisted.
