Leeds United just ‘bid’ £9m less than asking price for ‘outstanding’ transfer target

Leeds United’s transfer window appears to be heating up as reports claim that a bid has been lodged for a transfer target.

The Whites have endured a taxing market so far, which has seen plenty of their best members of the squad linked with exits.

Archie Gray confirmed his move to Tottenham for £40million, marking the first major loss for Daniel Farke this summer.

Meanwhile, Crysencio Summerville has been linked with a move to West Ham, along with fellow wideman Wilfried Gnonto facing interest from Everton.

Some moves have been made to bolster the options available to the Leeds manager though, with Joe Rodon joining permanently from Tottenham and Joe Rothwell making the season-long loan switch from AFC Bournemouth.

There’s still plenty of work to be done though, with the race to sign one star seemingly underway.

Leeds United bid for Gabriel Sara

Norwich City star Gabriel Sara has been heavily linked with a move to Leeds this summer, following an impressive campaign at Carrow Road.

The Brazilian bagged 13 goals and 12 assists from midfield last season, helping drag the Canaries into the Championship play-offs.

With the 25-year-old holding just two years on his contract, it could present an opportunity to swoop for a bargain.

In recent days, according to football reporter Ozgur Sancar, speaking to Habersar Ikirmizi, Leeds have made an opening bid.

“Although 16.5 million Euros are mentioned [as an asking price],” the journalist said. “Leeds United offered 6 million Euros to Norwich City three-four days ago for this player. Galatasaray officials are acting accordingly.”

Overall that means Norwich value Sara at roughly £14million, while the bid lodged is in the region of about £5million.

It is unclear as to the response from Norwich or whether Leeds will be forced to improve that offer to meet the asking price – which there is a difference of about £9million at this stage.

Should Leeds pay out to sign Gabriel Sara?

There will be plenty of questions surrounding Leeds’ move for Sara in the summer transfer market, not least if the deal is worth it.

The Whites will have to recruit well to ensure they both stay within the margins of the financial rules while also being competitive enough at the top end to earn promotion.

A move for Sara would certainly help with the competitive aspect, following a season filled with goal involvements.

“He [Sara] is an outstanding player,” David Wagner told the Eastern Daily Press early this year. “Not only for us but in this division – no one has a doubt about this. It’s crystal clear.”

Whether Leeds will be able to pay close to £14million for his services are a different question though, not least with the talent already in the squad.

It means that if the club can find a bargain with an early bid, then it’s a deal worth pursuing.

Anything beyond a figure that is deemed reasonable may lead to the need to pull out of transfer talks altogether.
