Leeds United face competition for the signing of Hibernian midfielder Josh Mulligan after two European giants entered the race for his signature.

The 49ers are expected to enter the transfer market in January as they look to strengthen the Leeds squad for the second half of the season.

While Daniel Farke has remained tight-lipped on Leeds’ likely transfer priorities for January, the club has been linked with a host of names in recent weeks.

Reports have suggested that Leeds scouts attended a Europa League game to scout three rising talents, as FC Midtjylland secured a 1-0 win over Genk.

Now, Leeds face a battle for the signature of Hibs man Josh Mulligan, as clubs begin to jockey for position before the window opens.

Which position do Leeds United need to strengthen most in January?

Leeds were one of several clubs linked with Mulligan in recent days; however, they were understood to be behind Nottingham Forest in the race for the talented midfielder.

Now, according to FootMercato, the field to sign the Scottish youth international is now even more crowded, after Lille and Wolfsburg registered their interest in the former Dundee man.

The report states: “According to our information, Wolfsburg (Bundesliga) and LOSC Lille have made inquiries.

“Lille’s management senses a bargain: Josh Mulligan has a release clause for this winter, and his transfer fee remains very affordable for a potential international.

“It now remains to be seen which club— Lille, the English clubs, or the German side—will be the most convincing in securing his signature.”

The connection between Scotland and Leeds has been strong over the years, with some of the biggest names in the club’s history, such as Billy Bremner, Peter Lorimer, Eddie Gray, Gordon Strachan, and Gary McAllister, all of whom came from north of the border.

Mulligan is now being tipped as the next big thing for the Tartan Army as he looks to force his way into contention for the 2026 World Cup.

Do Leeds even NEED signings after enjoying success with a 3-5-2 formation?

We speak about what is possible (privately) but it’s not my job to speak in public about it or judge it in any way. I deal with what I’ve got. Of course I want the best possible squad, the best possible players and to improve the players as much as possible, but I don’t own the club

The talented midfielder showed his class in his most recent appearance for Hibs, as he almost single-handedly took Falkirk apart in a virtuoso display.

According to FotMob, Mulligan created three chances, the most of any player, and registered an assist in a 3-0 win, as he was handed an overall rating of 8.5.
