Leeds United deal for free agent now hangs in the balance after Fabrizio Romano shares damning transfer update

Leeds United have already made use of the free agent market this summer, bringing in Lukas Nmecha after his release at Wolfsburg.

Leeds United’s first signing of the summer and of 2025 was Lukas Nmecha. Earlier in June, the club announced that Nmecha will sign for Leeds United on July 1st when his Wolfsburg deal officially expires, and he might be the first of many free agents who arrive at Elland Road this summer.

Daniel Farke reportedly has a £150million transfer budget this summer. He’s already spent £15million of that on Jaka Bijol, and some of his other reported transfer targets could end up costing a whole lot more than £15million.

It’s been reported that Leeds United have increased their offer to sign Habib Diarra from Strasbourg, going up to just under £25million. Other names like Aaron Ramsdale could cost Leeds United £20million, so the numbers could soon add up for the Whites.

Free agents could play a key role in their summer business and one such player who could be signed is Vladimir Coufal.

Latest Fabrizio Romano update is bad news for Leeds United

Leeds United are interested in signing Coufal following his West Ham release. Everton were also linked with a move for the Czech, and it was then revealed that Coufal was interested in signing for Everton where he’d be linking up with his former Hammers boss David Moyes.

But a potential move to Merseyside was then flipped on its head when Fabrizio Romano revealed that Everton had agreed a deal to sign Kenny Tete ahead of his Fulham exit. Romano has now revealed yet another twist in this transfer tale.

Romano has posted on X revealed that Fulham have made a last-minute effort to keep the right-back, offering him an ‘improved contract’ which means Tete now has to decide between staying at Fulham, or joining Everton.

Leeds United have to act fast if they want to sign Vladimir Coufal

Both left-backs and right-backs are needed at Leeds this summer, and Coufal is someone with vast experience of the Premier League, and a proven track record of being reliable and solid at Premier League level.

He may well be holding out for a move to Everton this summer, but Leeds United simply can’t afford to play these kinds of waiting games. Coufal isn’t a risky signing and Farke needs to make his move now before another team snaps him up.

Junior Firpo is leaving Leeds United this summer, opening up the spot on the left of defence, whilst Sam Byram is yet to renew his Leeds contract, casting yet more doubt over the amount of full-backs Farke will have going into next season.

Bogle could be capable of playing on the left and he may well end up doing so next season, especially if Coufal arrives as he’s an out-and-out right-back.

If Everton miss out on Tete then they might put all their attentions on a move for Coufal, which would in turn scupper Leeds’ plans to sign the departing Hammers veteran.
