Lukas Nmecha has signed a pre-contract agreement with Leeds United, which will see the striker officially join the club on July 1, when his Wolfsburg contract expires.

The seven-time Germany international has agreed a two-year contract with the club, in a move that came somewhat out of the blue. Graham Smyth was first to report Nmecha’s arrival, hours before he signed on.

Nmecha has already given his first interview with the club. He shares how he spoke with his old Wolfsburg teammate Josuha Guilavogui regarding a move to Leeds, and if Nmecha thinks Leeds can avoid the drop.

Leeds are expected to remain in the market for a big-name striker signing alongside Nmecha, which puts the future of Patrick Bamford and Mateo Joseph in doubt. But what number will Nmecha wear at Leeds?

Lukas Nmecha’s Wolfsburg number is taken at Leeds United

Leeds are set to wave goodbye to five members of Daniel Farke’s 2024-25 squad. Josuha Guilavogui has been confirmed as leaving on a free, while Sam Byram and Junior Firpo are out of contract in a fortnight.

Thomas Frank wants to take a look at Manor Solomon before a decision is made while Joe Rothwell is set to return to Bournemouth. The latter wore the no.8 shirt for Leeds as Farke’s men secured promotion.

Signed by Wolfsburg from Man City in the summer of 2021, Nmecha wore the no.10 shirt at Wolfsburg but of course, that is currently taken by Joel Piroe and last season’s top goalscorer is unlikely to leave.

The most-likely number Lukas Nmecha will wear at Leeds United

Having worn the no.10 shirt for the last four years, Nmecha will be given a new number at Leeds. In his career previously, Nmecha wore 43 at Man City, 45 at Preston, 43 and 20 at Boro and seven at Anderlecht.

Well, 20, 43 and 45 are all free at Leeds currently but the no.7 shirt is currently occupied by Dan James. Like Piroe, James won’t be going anywhere this summer and remains one of Leeds’ key players.

Given he wore 20 in the past, and anything past 40 is normally given to loan signings or academy players, the chances are that Nmecha dons the 20 shirt for the second time in his career after doing so at Boro.
