Somewhat out of the blue, Lukas Nmecha was announced as Leeds United’s first signing of the summer with the Wolfsburg striker agreeing a pre-contract that will see him join on July 1.
Nothing had been touted of a potential move for Germany international Nmecha until out of nowhere, Graham Smyth reported that 26-year-old Nmecha had agreed a free transfer to Leeds this summer.
A couple of hours later, and Leeds had announced the signing of Nmecha – the club’s first new signing since Josuha Guilavogui had been brought in as an emergency signing. Two teammates at Wolfsburg.
Indeed, Nmecha says he spoke to Guilavogui about a move to Leeds in his first interview with the club after it was confirmed the former Man City, Preston and Middlesbrough ace had signed a two-year deal.

Lukas Nmecha thinks Leeds are in for a ‘difficult’ challenge
Leeds were always expected to bring in a new striker but the addition of Nmecha does now place the future of Mateo Joseph and Patrick Bamford in doubt. Joseph is said to be keen on a move to Real Betis.
But moving forward, Nmecha will now be focusing on helping to keep Leeds in the Premier League come the end of the 2025-26 season. While he admits it will be difficult, he is confident Leeds can manage it.
‘It’s definitely going to be difficult. The last few years have shown some difficulties with the teams coming up. But I think Leeds is just a massive club. It is a bit of a difference to what we’ve seen,” Nmecha said.
“I’m really optimistic. I think with the team we already have and few more new people coming in, we can do a really good job,” Nmecha told Leeds United’s YouTube channel in his first interview after signing on.
What Leeds are planning to do after Lukas Nmecha’s arrival
There are a few doubts regarding Nmecha’s arrival. While a very low-risk signing given he cost nothing, the German has had injury issues and only managed 85 appearances during his four years at Wolfsburg.
Well, reports say Leeds are planning on bringing in another striker alongside Nmecha. That would further place Bamford and Joseph’s future into doubt, given Leeds would have five strikers available to Farke.
Nmecha of course, has played in different positions over the years. But naturally, he is a striker and has been brought to Leeds to play as a striker. Leeds remain locked in talks to agree a fee for Jaka Bijol.
