Leeds United and Sunderland told £26m target’s ‘most likely’ destination is the Premier League

Leeds United have the chance to extend the gap between themselves and the relegation zone to 10 points on Sunday, but the squad still requires improvement in the January window.

Paul Merson believes West Ham are done after their 3-0 hammering by rock-bottom Wolves, but Daniel Farke will know that Leeds still need to maintain a point a game, if they are going to survive relegation.

The Hammers are set to add three new attacking players in the first few days of the window and while the gap is growing, Leeds need to be aware that their biggest rivals in the race for survival are spending cash.

The move to 3-5-2 has increased the need for depth up front, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Lukas Nmecha neither a stranger to injury. Behind them, Joel Piroe could end up leaving Leeds this summer.

Leeds and Sunderland target deemed as likely to move to England

Back in the summer, Leeds were strongly linked with a move for Roma striker Artem Dovbyk. The Ukraine star only joined Roma in the summer of 2024 for £26m, having won the La Liga golden boot with Girona.

His form with Roma last season was intermittent and this season, following the addition of Evan Ferguson, Dovbyk has been ushered aside. The powerhouse has been afforded just 600 minutes of football so far.

Well, Italian outlet TMW say Leeds are interested again. They face competition from Sunderland, but the report claims – crucially – that Dovbyk’s ‘most likely’ destination is a loan move to the Premier League.

Leeds desperately need to bring in another striker this month

With Nmecha scoring goals and Calvert-Lewin hitting form, the need for a striker while Farke was using a one-man striker system wasn’t great. Especially, with Piroe and Harry Gray providing cover in behind.

Obviously, Noah Okafor can play there too. Okafor is starting up front with Calvert-Lewin against Man United. But Okafor is a winger and Piroe might leave come the end of the January transfer window.

If we get offered £10m or more for Gnonto we have to sell, right? 🇮🇹

That money can be used on someone better suited to the 3-5-2 formation… 💰

Leeds need another striker and Dovbyk fits the aerially strong, physical powerhouse that this Leeds side need up top. The perfect competition for Calvert-Lewin and possible partner, ahead of Nmecha.

Whether Roma are willing to loan Dovbyk out may depend on the permanent option included in the loan deal. Perhaps, Leeds could arrange a permanent fee to be agreed if the club avoid relegation.
