Sheffield United fans have been reacting to the news that former Leeds United star Patrick Bamford is in talks with the club.

Patrick Bamford has been without a club since it was finally confirmed he would be leaving Leeds United late in the summer.

The striker’s contract expired in the summer but there initially remained a chance his deal would be extended, with his exit after seven years only announced on August 28.

Bamford was sent heartfelt messages by Leeds fans and former teammates upon his exit, but has been without a club ever since.

There were brief links with a move to Spanish side Getafe that didn’t materialise and the striker has been training with Frank Lampard’s Coventry City recently in a bid to keep up his fitness.

Now it appears he may finally have a club as Bamford has reportedly opened talks with Sheffield United over a shock move.

The news hasn’t gone down well in South Yorkshire.

Patrick Bamford news sends Sheffield United fans into meltdown

The Telegraph’s Mike McGrath took to X, formerly Twitter, to report the news, saying: “Patrick Bamford in talks with Sheffield United, according to sources at the club.”

BBC reporter Andy Giddings also added in his own social media post: ‘Understand those talks are for a short-term deal until Jan initially, which makes sense given the CW’s need for a ‘number 9’.’

Regardless of how long Bamford would be spending at Bramall Lane, if he does indeed sign, the news hasn’t been welcomed excitedly by many Sheffield United fans on social media.

While some believe the signing could be a smart one and is a low-risk move to make, a lot more have been left underwhelmed, especially given his injury record and lack of goals recently.

User @PaddysMad ironically remarked: “Worst case scenario will have a strong League 1 side,” though @Simon18893 couldn’t see the funny side and said: “Just sack Wilder now.”

“How have I just opened my phone to this?” lamented @FG_utb2, while @LegendWilderUTB said: “DON’T DO IT UNITED FFS.”

@JohnCurtis1889 added: “Another injury-prone crock. One disaster after another this season. Selles has killed us.”

What Chris Wilder has said about signing free agents like Patrick Bamford

Wilder had recently been asked if he would utilise the free agent market to try and add some new recruits to his struggling side, which sits in the Championship relegation zone.

He said: “No, we’re out of that market,” making the new links with Bamford a bit of a surprise.

The chance of Bamford playing under Chris Wilder is a prospect that immediately had Leeds fans intrigued, given the pair’s history.

Wilder namechecked Bamford in a speech when Sheffield United beat Leeds to promotion in 2018-19, but the 32-year-old got his own back in April’s promotion celebrations when he started a chant with Leeds fans that doesn’t have much nice to say about the Blades boss.

Wilder went on to reveal there was no bad blood and Bamford had called him to apologise afterwards.
