Newcastle United defender Matt Targett has become the subject of a late enquiry from Leeds United and now, Newcastle’s stance on the possible sale of the left-back has emerged.
Leeds are expected to try and make a few signings before the end of the January window, with Daniel Farke saying he wants to strengthen three positions – a striker, a no.10 and a centre-back this month.
But a left-back was not supposedly on Leeds’ radar in the final few days of the window. In the last few windows, Leeds have waited until the final few days before bringing in new signings, like Ao Tanaka.
With the deadline approaching on Monday, Leeds have made an enquiry to sign Matt Targett. The left-back has managed just two appearances for Newcastle this season after a spell on the sidelines injured.

Newcastle United’s stance on selling Matt Targett to Leeds
A £15m signing at Newcastle and described as “outstanding” by Eddie Howe as per Sky Sports, Targett is a proven left-back at Premier League level. But the fact remains, Leeds aren’t in need of a new left-back.
But that could change. Junior Firpo and Sam Byram are both out of contract in the summer, and Firpo is not short of admirers. Real Betis are leading the charge for Firpo, while Besiktas also want the defender.
In the final days of the window, anything can happen. Marc Roca and Diego Llorente’s Betis may look to raid Leeds for Firpo and it would leave The Whites in need of a new left-back before Monday’s deadline.
Newcastle World now share what The Toon’s stance is on selling Targett. Indeed, they claim Newcastle are ‘open to offers’ for Targett in the coming days with his Toon spell clearly coming to an end in due course.

How much Newcastle expert thinks Matt Targett would cost
Amid the links between Leeds and Targett, LeedsUnited.News spoke to Newcastle expert and Geordie Boot Boys writer James Rutherford about a potential move for Targett from Tyneside to Yorkshire.
He says that if Leeds do firm up their interest, then a move would cost between £7m and £10m even if it is speculation: “He is not going to command a huge fee – maybe somewhere between £7m and £10m.”
Linked with Leeds in the past, Targett may be the subject of an enquiry from The Whites now but it may take until the summer for Leeds to actually firm up their interest – depending on Firpo’s future.
