How Everton feel their chances are of being able to sign Wilfried Gnonto from Leeds United

Everton know all too well what it is like to deal with Leeds United following last summer’s pursuit of Wilfried Gnonto.

The Toffees seemingly had everything going for them in trying to prise Gnonto to Goodison Park, apart from being able to agree a fee with Leeds.

Gnonto was keen on the move to Merseyside 12 months ago and did everything in his power to force it through, from refusing to play, to handing in a transfer request.

Despite four separate offers from Everton, one of which was believed to be around the £25 million mark, Leeds simply refused to budge. As such, Gnonto stayed for the full season.

However, with Everton back in the market for new wingers, Gnonto has once again emerged on the radar, with talks underway with both Leeds and his representatives.

How Everton feel about dealing with Leeds again for Gnonto

Everton and Leeds have already completed one deal this summer in Jack Harrison, but that was a very easy one to get over the line.

After Leeds’ failure to win promotion, Harrison once again had a clause in his contract that allowed him to leave on loan again, and Everton took full advantage.

Earlier on in the summer, Leeds had actually been open to Gnonto’s sale as a way of helping them keep Archie Gray, but no one came to the table and so the 18-year-old joined Tottenham.

Leeds’ stance now is that PSR concerns have been significantly eased by Gray’s exit, and so any deal will now be done on their terms, unless a player makes clear they want to go.

As a result of that, according to iNews, Everton are ‘understood’ to be of the belief that a deal with Leeds for Gnonto is going to be difficult to pull off.

As per other reports, an asking price of £22 million is said to have been set, but of course, Leeds will only sell if the structure of the deal is right.

What is Gnonto’s stance on a move to Everton?

After being reintegrated back into the squad last August, Daniel Farke made the promise to Gnonto he would get no third chance if he was to repeat those actions again.

If Leeds once again play hard ball, like Everton expect them to do, it will be interesting to see how Gnonto goes about it.

It is said that Gnonto would be keen on a move to the Toffees, but at the same time, he will not force it through in the same way as last summer, as he is wary of how that could affect his relationship with Leeds fans.
