Whilst promotion is a huge boost for Leeds United as a club, it could spell the end of one or several players’ time at Elland Road.
Leeds United are returning to the Premier League. Daniel Farke in his second season in charge has finally returned the club to the big time and now, a monumental summer transfer window lies ahead.
It’s made more difficult because of the fact that CEO Angus Kinnear is leaving for Everton, possibly along with a couple of other behind the scenes figures at Elland Road, and so how Leeds United approach the summer window remains to be seen.
The 49ers have a summer transfer plan in place at the club. They’ve been preparing for promotion all season long and we could now see a lot of money spent on new signings. But we could also see a handful of players move on.
Junior Firpo is out of contract and looking set to leave, possibly along with Sam Byram who also sees his contract with the club expire this summer. Meanwhile, Farke may be keen to rid his first-team squad of any deadwood and free up as much space in the budget as possible in doing so.

Illan Meslier now backed to leave Leeds United this summer
Illan Meslier certainly looks like one Leeds United player facing an uncertain future. A few weeks ago Farke dropped Meslier and replaced him with Karl Darlow in a decision that’s since proved worthwhile. Darlow has looked infinitely more confident and assured in goal than Meslier was.
All season Meslier has had links with a move away from Elland Road. Manchester United have been linked with Meslier and more recently Rennes have been credited with an interest in the Frenchman, who remains under contract in West Yorkshire until the summer of 2026. Per Salary Sport, Meslier earns £23k-a-week at Leeds.
But an emerging report from Daily Mail states that Meslier ‘is expected to leave if an offer comes in and a new goalkeeper is high on the priority list’ for Leeds United. One name linked recently is Wolves goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

Joe Hart’s telling verdict on Illan Meslier’s future at Leeds United
Ahead of a return to the Premier League it seems vital that Farke signs a new, long-term no.1 for the club, and puts to bed the uncertainty of the starting spot once and for all.
For Meslier, that surely means he leaves. He’s had more than enough chances and he’s not impressed this season. Speaking recently, Joe Hart gave his verdict on Meslier at Leeds United and he too suggested that the 25-year-old might have to move on.
Hart explained: “I just can’t work it out. I remember when he first came to the Premier League, I thought wow, who is this goalkeeper. Baby-faced, great left foot, incredible, absolute cat.”
Hart went on to add: “I don’t know his contract situation. There is a top goalkeeper there, but whether they have the patience to let him show what he can do in the Premier League, I don’t know.”
There’s been no shortage of goalkeepers linked this season. But who eventually comes in remains a mystery.
