Coventry City hope to sign former Leeds United player who endured a nightmare at Elland Road

Leeds United don’t have much going on in terms of signing players but elsewhere former players are making moves.

The Whites’ quiet window goes on as the 49ers’ promise of four signings at Leeds is looking very false.

In their defence, the Leeds owners are saving money for the summer as the hope will be that Daniel Farke’s side can focus on the Premier League.

However, this won’t cure Leeds fans’ transfer fever as even the smallest signing could give the Whites faithful a boost going into a pivotal part of the season.

Away from Leeds, a former player is close to securing a new venture after previously playing at Elland Road.

Coventry City hope to sign former Leeds United player Matt Grimes

According to BBC Sport, Coventry City are ‘hoping’ to sign Swansea City midfielder Matt Grimes.

The Sky Blues have seen two bids rejected for the former Leeds player as a deal could come to fruition before January’s deadline.

Grimes endured a short loan spell away from Swansea in the 2016/17 season with Leeds as the Swans enjoyed their time in the Premier League.

The 29-year-old has had some brilliant times in his career, but his tenure at Leeds was far from that.

Grimes had a nightmare at Leeds as he was called ‘ridiculous things’

Grimes has turned many new chapters since his time at Leeds, but it’s one he doesn’t want to recall.

The Swansea midfielder clearly doesn’t hold too many grudges as Grimes was full of praise for Leeds in November.

But from a personal view, the midfielder had a tough time in Yorkshire.

Speaking to WalesOnline in 2022, Grimes assessed his time at Leeds and how he wouldn’t wish it on any footballer.

“The mental state I was in that season (at Leeds), I don’t wish on any footballer. I was training, not playing, going home, and sleeping on the sofa because I was living on my own as I wasn’t with my girlfriend at the time,” Grimes said.

“I was just in a lull of training and not playing, running on the weekends and it impacted my mental health so much. I was stepping on the pitch, not feeling confident at all and I was thinking should I even be here? Should I be at a Premier League team? What am I going to do after this season because it has gone so badly.

“That, coupled with thousands of people outside of football telling me how bad I was, calling me all sorts of ridiculous things.”

Many years have passed for the midfielder as he looks on to his new venture with Coventry, but unfortunately for Grimes, his Leeds stint will always be with him.
