Burnley and Sheffield United were relegated from the Premier League in 2024, and Leeds United in 2023. In 2025, all three could be promoted from the Championship with the trio neck and neck right now.
Going into the next round of league fixtures, it’s Leeds United who sit in 1st place of the Championship table, following their hard-fought 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers last time out.
Burnley are in 2nd and Sheffield United are in 3rd. Both are level on 49 points right now, compared to Leeds on 52. And who goes up this season might well depend on what the three clubs do in the January transfer window.
Interestingly, Leeds United are linked with Mike Tresor at Burnley. It’s been claimed that Leeds could make an audacious winter swoop for the attacker who’s yet to play a single minute of football in the 2024/25 season.
The Clarets paid Genk £15.4million to sign Tresor ahead of the 2023/24 season. The attacker failed to score or assist in 16 Premier League games for Burnley last time round, with injury reportedly keeping him on the sidelines this season.

Mike Tresor in ‘mysterious’ Burnley situation amid Leeds United links
Speaking on the Championship Transfer Window Special on Shots!TV, Burnley Express journalist Matt Scrafton weighed in on the situation regarding Tresor at Turf Moor.
He explained: “It all remains a mystery… The official line from the club is that he had a serious injury at the back end of last season, and that was ongoing during the summer. He came back with, Scott Parker said illness, but never gave too much detail about what the illness was.
“He would be a difference-maker, that’s the frustrating thing for the fans, because he wasn’t poor last season, but we didn’t see much of him last season. When we did, we didn’t see a great deal. Before that in Genk, his nickname was the ‘assist king’ [24 Jupiler League assists in 2022/23].
“It doesn’t look like he’ll be featuring anytime soon. Last time I asked Scott Parker last week, he said he had a dead leg. Not heard of him since. Alan Pace, the chairman, was asked about him at a recent fans’ forum. He sort of said, ‘We’d love him to be available, but we can’t guarantee it’.
“So it all sounds very mysterious, and it doesn’t sound like he’ll be featuring anytime soon.”

Scott Parker shares Mike Tresor update at Burnley
Tresor has become a real talking point for Burnley fans. Manager Scott Parker hasn’t made the subject any clearer either, refusing to rule out a January exit for Tresor.
Parker said of the left-sided attacker: “I’m honestly not really sure [if Tresor stays beyond January]. What I do know is that the club have put huge investment into Mikey and he’s obviously got quality.”
Given Parker and Scrafton’s comments, it seems like there might be a lot more to Tresor’s current Burnley exile than the surface may suggest. But like Parker says, the club paid a lot to sign him and they’ll be eager to get their money’s worth.
This mysterious situation regarding Tresor remains so. For Leeds though, whether signing a player who’s not played at all in 2024/25 is such a good idea is up for debate. Daniel Farke will surely want players who can come in and immediately bolster the side.
