Daniel Farke is eyeing up a new midfield department for Leeds United this summer, with some exciting potential signings being mooted.
Leeds United need new bodies across the pitch: in defence, midfield and attack, and with a new no.1 goalkeeper high up on Daniel Farke’s summer to-do list as well.
So far this summer we’ve seen a horde of players linked with Leeds United. Many of them are midfielders though, suggesting Farke’s priority to bolster his midfield department before anything else this summer.
And it’s no surprise given how light his current midfield options are: after Joe Rothwell returned to Bournemouth, there’s just Ethan Ampadu, Ao Tanaka and Ilia Gruev as his options in front of the defence.
Kalvin Phillips has been linked with a return to Leeds United and that could be something that happens later in the window, with Man City tipped to loan out Phillips once again. Another name now being linked with a move to Elland Road is Julian Weigl.

Julian Weigl is a major transfer target for Leeds United this summer
Recent reports have revealed how Leeds United are interested in signing Weigl, 29, from Farke’s former club Borussia Monchengladbach this summer. The German has played for Borussia Dortmund and Benfica in the past, having featured in either the Europa League or the Champions League in the last eight seasons.
Weighing in on the matter, Daily Mail have now revealed that Weigl is actually a ‘major’ transfer target for Farke this summer, adding that the Leeds United boss is determined to strengthen his midfield ahead of the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season.
In 2024/25, Weigl featured 33 times in the Bundesliga for Monchengladbach who eventually finished in 10th. The six-cap German international failed to score but claimed two assists across the season.

How do Julian Weigl’s 24/25 stats compare to Joe Rothwell’s?
Leeds United fans loved Rothwell in 2024/25. The man on loan from Bournemouth proved to be a key player and his presence will be missed next season, but Leeds simply need to be aiming much higher than Rothwell now they’re a Premier League team.
And Weigl’s stats are very comparable to Rothwell’s last season, but with Weigl doing it in the Bundesliga. He appears to be a slightly deeper-lying midfielder than Rothwell, but still one who moves the ball around very effectively.
| Stat (league) | Rothwell in 24/25 | Weigl in 24/25 |
| Assists | 4 | 2 |
| Touches PG | 56.8 | 64.6 |
| Big chances created | 4 | 2 |
| Key passes PG | 1.7 | 0.4 |
| Passes PG | 42.4 (91%) | 47.1 (89%) |
| Passes in own half PG | 17.1 | 27.2 |
| Passes in opp. half PG | 26.9 | 19.9 |
| Balls recovered PG | 2.6 | 4.0 |
With Weigl under contract for another three years, it could cost Leeds United a pretty penny to sign him this summer. But he’s not got European football to look forward to next season and so the timing could be right for him to try his hand in England, with a familiar face in his former boss Farke.
