Leeds United and Sheffield United were the Championship’s two runaway teams at the top of the table for a long while this season. Both have shown some mixed form in recent weeks though, and both are now vying to sign the same player.

Leeds United’s lead at the top of the Championship table has shrunk to just one point, with fans fuming following the last outing against Hull City in particular.

Goalkeeper Illan Meslier had a nightmare game against Hull. He was caught off his line for the first of Hull’s three goals, before gifting them a second as the Tigers clawed back from a two-goal deficit in the second half.

But Leeds’ defence as a whole could be improved. The likes of Sam Byram has been criticised in recent weeks, whilst Pascal Struijk missed the Hull game through injury, further highlighting the lack of depth at centre-back.

Daniel Farke’s side have been linked with a number of centre-backs in the January transfer window with one being Nottingham Forest’s Andrew Omobamidele.

Alan Nixon drops Andrew Omobamidele hint amid Leeds United interest

Omobamidele played under Farke at Norwich City, with the German actually handing Omobamidele his first Premier League start back in 2021. The Irish international sealed a £10million move to Forest in 2023 but has played just 11 Premier League matches since.

And the 22-year-old has played just one Carabao Cup game in the entirety of the 2024/25 season. On Monday night, Forest left Omobamidele out of the squad that faced Wolves, suggesting he’s set for a January exit.

Posting on Bluesky, journalist Alan Nixon was asked about the race to sign Omobamidele with both Leeds United and 3rd place Sheffield United keen. Nixon simply said that Leeds ‘seem more interested’ than Sheffield United as things stand.

Leeds United in talks to sign Andrew Omobamidele

Nixon’s comments certainly compliment the most recent revelations on the Forest man, who seems nailed on to leave the City Ground during this January transfer window.

Recent reports revealed that Leeds are in talks to sign Omobamidele with Nottingham Forest wanting £10million for the defender.

It’s also added that Leeds’ move for Omobamidele would be an initial loan deal, but with an obligation to later buy the player on a permanent basis from Nottingham Forest.

With centre-backs light at Elland Road and the likes of Struijk having been linked with Spurs, another centre-back addition could be ideal, and reuniting Omobamidele with Farke would be a great move for the Irishman.
