Leeds United’s interest in Zion Suzuki comes at a time when the club’s goalkeeping department remains one of the biggest unresolved areas in Daniel Farke’s squad.
With Illan Meslier set to leave, Leeds have confirmed via their retained list that they are still in talks with Karl Darlow and Alex Cairns. Lucas Perri has struggled, which proves why Leeds want to sign a goalkeeper.

Tottenham are lurking…
According to Italian reporter Gianluigi Longari, Leeds have joined Aston Villa in the race to sign Japan’s World Cup no.1 goalkeeper Suzuki. Leeds had been linked with Hidemasa Morita, and now Suzuki.
He said: “The Premier League is eyeing Parma’s Zion Suzuki with great interest. In addition to the already well-known Aston Villa inquiry, Leeds are also gathering information. Interest is set to grow.”
Interestingly, Crysencio Summerville’s goal for the Netherlands at the World Cup came against Japan in a 2-2 draw between the two nations. His curling, left-footed effort found its way past Leeds target Suzuki.
Leeds still have a major decision to make in goal
The no.1 position remains one of the biggest priorities facing Leeds this summer. Darlow performed admirably when called upon last season, making 24 appearances and keeping five clean sheets.
His performances were strong enough to attract interest from Manchester United, while Leeds remain keen to keep him at Elland Road.
However, Darlow turns 36 this year and has largely spent recent seasons as a backup goalkeeper. Perri arrived from Lyon with high expectations but struggled to make the position his own.

Suzuki has taken an impressive route to Serie A
Born in Newark, New Jersey, Suzuki has developed into one of Japan’s most promising goalkeepers. Despite being eligible for multiple nations through his family background, he chose to represent Japan.
He has already established himself within the national-team setup. The 23-year-old emerged through the academy of Urawa Red Diamonds before earning a move to Belgian side Sint-Truiden.
His performances there convinced Parma to bring him to Italy, with the goalkeeper officially joining the Serie A club in 2024. Suzuki’s development has been steady rather than spectacular.
But that consistency is precisely why his reputation continues to grow. He has already accumulated valuable experience across three different leagues before reaching what is typically a goalkeeper’s peak.
Premier League clubs are taking notice
The latest report from Italy claims Leeds are gathering information on Suzuki, while an Aston Villa inquiry is already established. Interest appears to be increasing as clubs assess the goalkeeper market.

Suzuki recorded five clean sheets, 66 saves and a save percentage above 70 per cent during his time with Parma, demonstrating the consistency required to thrive in one of Europe’s most demanding leagues.
Parma are also under little pressure to sell. Suzuki is contracted until June 2029, giving the Italian club a strong negotiating position if interest continues to grow.
Leeds would be targeting the right profile
Reports suggest Suzuki could command a fee in the region of €25m to €30m. A significant investment, but it would also reflect the growing belief that he can become a long-term Premier League goalkeeper.

Leeds do not simply need another goalkeeper in the squad. They need a player capable of holding the position for years to come. Darlow has shown he can be trusted, but the veteran is not long term.
Suzuki’s age, experience and trajectory make him a far more natural fit for what Leeds should be building towards. The fact that Villa are monitoring the situation suggests Leeds are looking in the right market.
Whether a deal ultimately materialises remains to be seen, but the logic behind Leeds’ interest is difficult to dispute. Suzuki looks exactly like the calibre of goalkeeper Leeds should be assessing.
