Leeds United’s retained list contained very few surprises, but one name stood out immediately. Sam Byram looked destined to leave Elland Road this summer, but it might not be the case.

Leeds have published their retained list for 2026-27 and in terms of the first team, there are two players leaving. Illan Meslier on a free, and Facundo Buonanotte back to parent club Brighton after a poor loan.

Then, Leeds confirmed they are in talks with three players. Amid links Man United and Tottenham, Karl Darlow is one Leeds are aiming to keep. Leeds are in talks to extend Sam Byram and Alex Cairns’ deals.

There was little indication that Byram would still be part of Leeds’ plans beyond the end of his current deal. Byram managed just five appearances in all competitions last season.

Daniel Farke can guide Leeds United into Europe by 2028 – DISCUSS 🪄

The 32-year-old found himself on the fringes of Daniel Farke’s squad during the club’s return to the Premier League. That was a sharp contrast to the previous two years.

The defender had become an important figure after he returned to Leeds on trial in 2023. What began as a short-term opportunity evolved into a remarkable second spell, playing an important role in promotion.

Byram sounded like a player preparing for his next move

The strongest evidence that an exit was approaching came from Byram himself. Speaking about his future, he said: “Yeah, I think get the job done here. You know, I’m confident that, we’ll see that out.

“For me, you know, I still think I’ve got a few years ahead playing football. I’d like to play regularly if I can. It’s something off the back of before coming here, I had a lot of years on the sideline with injuries.

“So I think for me to get myself in a position where it’s the best I’ve felt physically, I think that’s something I really want to fulfil, play as much as I can.” It sound like a player considering the next stage of his career.

When a player is out of contract, has seen his opportunities decline and is openly discussing a desire for regular football, the natural assumption is that a departure will follow.

That is what makes the retained list revelation surprising

It is important to separate two different points. Leeds wanting to keep Byram is not the surprise. Farke has consistently trusted him throughout his second spell at the club.

The defender went from trialist to key contributor, and Leeds repeatedly demonstrated how highly they valued his experience and reliability. The surprise is that contract talks are happening at all.

The circumstances surrounding Byram’s situation appeared to point in one direction, yet Leeds’ retained list revealed that discussions over a fresh deal are ongoing. Many expected him to go, so it is a twist.

Leeds clearly still see value in keeping him

There are obvious reasons why Leeds may want to retain Byram. His versatility for one, while his experience could prove useful in a squad preparing for another demanding Premier League campaign.

There is also the possibility that experienced homegrown players carry additional value when clubs are building Premier League squads, although Leeds have not publicly stated any reason behind the talks.

The retained list has therefore altered what looked like one of Leeds’ most straightforward summer decisions. A few weeks ago, Byram’s departure appeared almost inevitable.

Now, the possibility of him remaining at Elland Road has become one of the more intriguing subplots of Leeds’ summer, even if whether that aligns with his desire for regular football remains unclear.
