Chelsea now look the favourites to sign a high-profile defender this summer, despite Leeds United reportedly agreeing personal terms to sign him in a club-record deal.

Leeds have moved aggressively in their pursuit of Diomande and have been linked with a club-record £43m move. However, there is fresh interest emerging from Chelsea, Bournemouth and Como.

On a scale of 1-10, how good would Diomande be? 🧱

Explain!

Leeds’ interest in Diomande has been one of the most ambitious transfer stories of the summer so far. The newly-promoted side have been credited with plans to spend £43m on the Sporting defender.

It would comfortably break the club’s existing transfer record. There are also claims that they have agreed personal terms with Diomande. Leeds have done much of the groundwork required to complete a deal.

Chelsea, Bournemouth and Como have now entered the picture

However, Leeds no longer appear to have a relatively clear run. Top Mercato say Chelsea, Bournemouth and Como are all interested in Diomande, significantly increasing the competition for his signature.

That changes the complexion of the deal. What initially looked like a battle Leeds could potentially control now risks becoming a multi-club chase involving teams with greater financial resources.

Part of the reason interest is growing may be Sporting’s apparent willingness to negotiate. Although Diomande has an €80m release clause, the Portuguese champions are open to accepting a lower fee.

That development broadens the market considerably. A player previously viewed as an expensive target suddenly becomes attainable for a wider group of clubs, particularly one as highly rated as Diomande.

Chelsea now appear best placed to complete a deal

Leeds deserve credit for acting decisively and moving early, but being first does not always guarantee success. Once a player attracts interest from Chelsea, the financial dynamics of a transfer shifts quickly.

Bournemouth and Como also add further competition, but Chelsea look the strongest contenders at this stage. Leeds may have established positive foundations through their pursuit and personal terms.

Yet the arrival of multiple rivals means the balance of power appears to be moving away from Elland Road. Chelsea have the financial muscle, while Bournemouth and Como have qualified for Europe.

If Sporting are genuinely willing to sell Diomande for less than his release clause, Leeds’ task becomes even more difficult. Chelsea now look the club best positioned to capitalise on that opportunity.
