Leeds United may still have work to do with Sporting CP, but agreeing personal terms with Ousmane Diomande is arguably the biggest breakthrough of the entire transfer saga.
A transfer fee can be negotiated, but convincing one of Europe’s most highly-rated young defenders to buy into the project was never guaranteed. A massive hurdle that Leeds United have supposedly crossed.
Reporter Christian Vaquero says Leeds are in talks with Sporting CP and have reached a verbal agreement with Diomande, with the same update stating that negotiations are in the final stretch.
On a scale of 1-10, how good would Diomande be? 🧱
Explain!
He reports on X: “Leeds United in talks with Sporting CP over Diomande. VERBAL agreement with the player. Sporting CP won’t go below 45M€ for the center-back. Negotiations in final stretch…”
That matters because the player was always the unknown factor. Leeds could meet Sporting’s demands, but there was no certainty that a defender of Diomande’s profile would be prepared to join Leeds.
Sporting’s position explains why the deal remains difficult
The Portuguese champions are under little pressure to sell a player who has a deal until 2030 and who is protected by an €80m release clause. It is therefore no surprise that Sporting will not go below €45m.

While previous reports suggested Leeds were exploring a deal worth around £43m. Even reports that Sporting’s demands increased during negotiations have not pushed Leeds away from the table.
The defender is a 22-year-old Ivory Coast international who has already accumulated significant senior experience despite his age. That is why this pursuit feels different from a typical promoted-club transfer.
Leeds are not chasing a short-term solution. They appear to be targeting a player capable of becoming a central figure in the team for years to come.
A record fee would underline Leeds’ conviction
If an agreement is eventually reached, the transfer would surpass the move that saw Georginio Rutter become Leeds United’s club-record signing. That alone highlights the scale of the commitment.

Leeds have continued pushing for Diomande despite Sporting’s firm stance because recruitment teams do not pursue deals at this level unless they are convinced they are signing a difference-maker.
Personal terms do not complete a transfer and Sporting still hold a strong negotiating position. Whether Leeds are willing to blow a large part of their budget on Diomande, at £43m, remains to be seen.
However, Leeds have already achieved something significant by convincing Diomande that Elland Road is the right next step, leaving the transfer fee as the final major hurdle to clear.
